So lets make this clear.
Turn10 have stated what:
- Car models use 10 times the number of polys of Forza 2
- Car models use 4 times the texture resolution of Forza 2
- Runs at 60fps @ 720p (currently 30fps @ 720p for cockpit)
- 400 cars
- 100 tracks
- 8 cars on track at any one time (both online/offline)
Okay so Turn10 state that Forza 3 IS the definitive car racing simulation.
What I have noticed so far is this?
The car models are extremely detailed and use absolutely tons of polygons, especially compared to Forza 2, the textures look good, but not sure where the 4 times the resolution is? The exterior environments are very detailed compared to any console racer at the moment. 60fps is pretty much a norm IMHO and very probably they will have cockpit running at 60fps by the time is ships, although it's likely means cockpit detail will be toned down a little to compensate. 720p is pretty much a standard in driving game, so fine. 400 cars is reasonably impressive. 100 tracks is pretty impressive. 8 cars only on track in both online and offline, is a bit limiting seeing as most racing games have double that.
So, in short, although we can't compare GT5 with Forza 3 as we dont know what going to be in GT5. But by looking at GT5P as a basis, I think the following:
Graphics
Forza 3 has better exterior environment graphics with a higher detail. Car models seem pretty much on a par with both GT5P and Forza 3, although supposedly the Forza 3 models use more polys compared to the GT5P models. Texture work is similar for both, although I feel the realistic lighting model makes GT5P graphics more realistic and less arcadey compared to Forza 3.
FPS & Resolution
We know that GT5P runs in a wide variety of resolutions and runs in gameplay mode at 60fps all the time (bar when loads of cars are on screen)...and GT5P runs in a version of 1080p (1280x1080p) which is signifcantly higher than 720p and runs @ 60fps in cockpit mode in this higher resolution compared to the 30fps in 720p at the moment for Forza 3.
Cars & Tracks
Well of course Forza runs rings round GT5P with this...but remember GT5P is a demo effectively and still had 70+ cars. The final game is expected to have 800 cars seeing as GTMobile has 800 cars. Although not sure about GT5's track range...not sure if it will be as high as 100. But then we have a maximum of 8 cars on each track in Forza 3 compared to 16 in GT5P....GT5P wins outright with this.
In conclusion
Forza 3 looks like a huge step up from 2 and the graphics have taken a huge bump up in quality, the extremely cool rewind feature is brilliant and all the other game features will more than likely out-do anything that PD has in store for GT5, but GT5P's graphics are still a match and are more realistic IMHO. The bigger resolution and guaranteed 60fps for cockpit along with double the number of cars on screen, shows that GT5 will still be a step ahead. Although Forza 3 has closed the gap in the market and effectively gives MS their driving sim...it's still not GT and needs to address 2 simple issues to bridge the gap....REALISM & CAR COUNT. So unless GT5 sees a reversal of all the good things about Prologue (ie resolution, graphic quality, fps & car count), Turn10 are actually talking out of their posterior describing F3 as the definitive racing sim...and it doesn't have the best graphics either.
