Forums - Microsoft - natal: why force feedback may be an easy and attractive addition

I've been reading alot about early impressions of natal and so far have run into to only one real negative with this technology. Speciffically, Nay sayers have mentioned that Natal's lack of a controller means games will lack tactile feedback, and may therefore less immersive than something which does (a.k.a. the Wii's Wiimote with rumble and speaker or Sony's new Wand).

What's weird is I haven't heard anyone mention how easy this "problem" may be to solve. A simple solution to this "problem" would be the inclusion of props/accessories with a game. For example, a game could come with a plastic sword and shield with built in speaker and rumble functionality at a relatively low cost. The inclusion of these types of props could make some Natal games more immersive/fun and solve the "problem" of needing tactile feedfack.

Any opinions?

This is an effective idea, but it would be fairly expensive in several ways: namely it would cause games to take up an enormous comparative amount of shelf space, and it would probably jack up the per-unit price for consumers.

After seeing comsumers willingness to have balance boards, guitars, drum sets, and all other sorts of extra accesories I'm not sure shelf space would be as big of a problem as you think. A video game toy box with game accessories would be no more a problem than the toy boxes that every household with children has. I think if the games are fun something like this might not really matter.

I know one thing... this generation is going to have one hell of a controllers/accessories/peripherals graveyard.

Some natal games might just tell you to go get something from your household to use. In any case, playing with props seems like it might enhance/compliment this technology.

Sure, it's possible with a little bit of imagination (a.k.a. da potential)! Also, since the camera can scan 3D objects, maybe you could see a representation of said item on screen?

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

Something universal like a rumble/speaker pack to wear on your wrist would be pretty good. People are willing to wear a Wiimote around their wrist so im pretty sure they would be willing to wear something even smaller if it enhances their game experience. Especially if its optional.

Tease.

or you can go to the dollar tree and by your own plastic sword and they can provide programming to pick up what you're holding :P

CURRENTLY PLAYING:  Warframe, Witcher 2

meh, force feedback is nice, but no means detrimental. Though honestly I would love to use a cardboard tube while playing some Samurai character.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

In some form or other I see props in natal's future. Hell, even if they aren't included people might just use their own props because the feedback of holding something tangable might be more fun.
