Thunder Thunder Thunder Thunder Cats!
Ah the ThunderCats, not to be confused with the more pleasant montezuma's revenge (aka Thundercraps) or the more entertaining pikachu (aka ThunderRat). This show has been around for roughly two and a half decades, but has anyone really taken a close look at this show. Here, at the first ever Orca review, we'll look inside the inner workings of the ThunderCats and see what they're made of.
ThunderCats follows the adventures of the eponymous team of heroes, cat-like humanoid aliens from the planet of Thundera. The series pilot begins with the dying Thundera meeting its end, forcing the ThunderCats (a sort of Thunderean nobility) to flee their homeworld. Basically you can think of these thundercats as Superman being forced to leave the home planet of Krypton. When the ThunderCats awake from their suspended animation on Third Earth, Lion-O discovers that his suspension capsule has failed to inhibit his aging, and he is now a child in the body of a man. In this case- just think of the tom hanks movie BIG and you'll be set.
This show also introduced one of the most annoying catchprases ever. "Snarf" A word to the wise- never base a drinking game around this show and the use of the word- you'll end up with a hangover that'd make even Kirby cringe.
On the surface, the show seems innocent enough. There are a bunch of good kitties that are fighting the forces of evil. Basically, just imagine He-man with some whiskers and you're set.
The ever subtle adult concepts are easy to miss- so I'll gladly point them out.
wowzers! For a kids show, this Cheetara is rather...suggestive. I thought this was probably due to the more lax rules the FCC had back in the day. The name of the first movie, however, extinguished any doubt I had. The first ThunderCat movie, called "ThunderCats- HO", obviously show's Lion-O's true job. That sword he carries isn't the sword of omens- that, dear friends, is a pimp cane!
It was announced on June 5, 2007, that Warner Brothers is making a CGI-animated feature film of ThunderCats, based on a script written by Paul Sopocy. In October 2007, Variety magazine revealed that Jerry O'Flaherty, veteran video game art director, had signed on to direct. The film is being produced by Spring Creek Productions. It is set for a summer 2010 release. Catch it in theaters, but leave the kids at home!
All in all, I give this show a 92/100. The sheer amount of episodes (130) and storyline make up for the hot kitty woman and the snarf thing. Do beware though- the bad guy is a mummy lady and is sorta creepy looking.
