Forums - Sony - Spong - Interview with Kaz Hirai

He compares the catching up they're doing with the PS3 with that of PS2, when they had to catch up with the Dreamcast!

Did I say it was? Why don't you keep your mouth shut if you don't have anything relevant to say?

Believe it or not i never once opened my mouth while typing the response to your thread and your condescending remark in regards to the interview. And i think when YOU take a quote out of context to post under your article for some sort of shock factor jab at Kaz or the PS/Sony, me commenting on it and your choice of which part of the interview to include is relevent to the thread, champ.

SPOnG:: The environment in which Sony operates has changed and your position in the market has shifted. How are you adapting to this?

Kaz Hirai:: I’m not entirely sure what metrics you would use to say that…

SPOnG:: The metrics of the… (Sales??)

Kaz Hirai:: (Interrupts thinking: "Not again with this sales BS...") Let me put it this way. When we started this business, we started from zero. We were a nobody. We had a zero installed base with the original PlayStation and we worked our way up from there. When we launched the PS2, the Dreamcast had a head-start and they had an installed base and we had to ensure we caught up and surpassed.

SPOnG:: Do you think the original PlayStation 3 price-point was a mistake? (Mmmm yes...)

Kaz Hirai: No, I think the original price-point was the right price-point, evidenced by the issues we had at launch when we couldn’t supply enough units to consumers in the Japanese market and the North American market, and it was a huge challenge to try and meet that demand because of all the production issues we had.

It wasn’t a pricing issue, it was a supply issue.  (If you find a PS3 in the shelves I'll give you $1200)

IMO: No matter what he needs to remain optimistic.

Instead of whining as you are, why don't you post some more relevant part of the interview so that we can discuss it? BTW if I was going for shock factor, there's a much better part there...

"when we couldn’t supply enough units to consumers in the Japanese market "

Did he just spin launching with 80k units as a positive thing?

"When we launched the PS2, the Dreamcast had a head-start and they had an installed base and we had to ensure we caught up and surpassed."

Did he just compare the Xbox 360 and the Wii to the Dreamcast? Sure there are parallels, like all three being thing made out of plastic that play games, but Sega's financial situation and above all developer support were vastly inferior to anybody's this generation.

He's also acting completely oblivious to the concepts of momentum and loosing developer support. Not to bash everything Playstation related, heck several of my all-time favorite games are on the PS2, but this guy is talking so far out of his ass that it brings a whole new meaning to the term "brain fart".

OMG! I need to bring my cam to the shops and claim my 1200$!!!

(edit: never mind, I just bothered to RTFA =P )

No, he didn't say that. You could have checked by opening the interview, you know? ;)
