I'll ask again.
How do we know that the tech threw dirt on the PS3?

An insider who sounds like the original owner using phrases like "Well documented dust magnet"

All that's there is what that supposed insider says. Unless the consumerist knows something that's not in the post, there's nothing that really proves that it's true.
I wish him a new system if it ends up being true, but as numerous commenters who have followed the story in the link have noted, the guy hasn't really kept a straight story and it's keeping them on the fence of believing either side.

So everyone is whole heartedly believing the words of an "insider"? Isn't that kinda dumb?

Perhaps
This whole thing just sucks for the guy who's been out a PS3.
Didn't someone prove that the PS3 was stolen, which was the main reason why Sony refused to repair it?
Currently playing on PS3: God of War III
Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII
Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

I don't know about that but the guy didn't have a reciept for it because his parents bought it for him. Then he said he bought it with his VISa later. The guy kept changing his story. But you would need to read through the thousands of comments to find those changes.
Didn't he start out by asking why he should have to take care of the system? Then when the image was released he said that the amount of dust shouldn't have been enough to be considered neglect? Then, didn't he shift to say that they put dust/dirt on it? Now he's saying that he indeed did take good care of the system.
If that's how his story has been going, I'd have to say I'm a little skeptical though I hope it turns out well if he is in the right.

Yes kinda. But I don't know what extent. When the pictures came he never denied it was his Ps3... And he did try to play off the amount of dust as "Ps3 being a well documented dust magnet" I remember him saying he shouldn't have to "Vacuum" his Ps3 because in the owners manual I guess it says something like "Take a low power vacuum to clean dust"
