Forums - Gaming - The 20 Most Innovative Games Ever Made

WoW.....Halo and COD innovative but no LPB.

Around the Network

They didn't do anywhere near enough research for this list. There are so many games there which could be replaced by an older one with the same features...

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

This is such a bad list.
CoD and BioShock make ma laugh, along with couple of others. And its missing way too many as well.

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

Yea COD should be taken off, wolfenstien 3d should replace doom.

Where is Zelda 1 and Metroid Prime.

Bioshock should definitely be replaced by System Shock 2, there are also too many FPS - pick the real innovators and leave of the refiners.

For example Cod4 is way too short of genuine new elements to be innovative IMHO. It's great, I still play it a fair bit, but it stands on the shoulders of other FPS included in the list next to it plus its own first iteration.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I think English is not the author's first language or he needs to look up innovative in the dictionary.

from dictionary.com

in⋅no⋅vate
/ˈɪnəˌveɪt/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [in-uh-veyt] Show IPA verb, -vat⋅ed, -vat⋅ing.
–verb (used without object)
1.     to introduce something new; make changes in anything established.
–verb (used with object)
2.     to introduce (something new) for or as if for the first time: to innovate a computer operating system.
3.     Archaic. to alter.

How can a 3rd iteration of the same genre be called MOST innovative unless it has completely changed the landscape. Is GTA 3 really that much different than GTA? I think GTA should be the one up there.

Halo popularized console FPS genre (especially Multiplayer) but was it really the "most" innovative?

FF7 may be the most well known but it uses mostly tried and true mechanics. It is definitely not the most innovative by any means. That place should be rerserved for FF4 or FF3.

Bioshock is not the first one to use these type of mechanics again I don't see how it can be called innovative if it uses mechanics used in several other games. IT may be more polished, more accessible than other games and definitely more memorable game of that genre but most innovative ... I don't think so.

COD changes the setting to modern times but it is definitely not the first to try that. I will grant that AMONG COD games it is unique because of its modern setting but we are not talking about it being the most innovative COD games are we?

Geometry wars - retro evolved is another game that makes no sense in the MOST innovative games of last 20 years category.

Wii sports is another that I don't agree with. In terms of gameplay they are the same games as any other tennis or bowling or boxing games (in fact they are more akin to earlier versions of these games ... think mid to late 80s) the only true innovation is the wii controller this would be like saying Diablo is the most innovative RPG as it allows you to use a mouse and keyboard. .

In terms of most innovative games a lot of older franchises should be on teh list, Zelda:OOT should be there. Not having that there when it revolutionized 3d person handling is a major oversight. Same goes for Goldeneye64.

^^

Nicely put. And I completely agree.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I guess the most innovative by popular demand...

Ok, I will try and make a top 20 list, but not in any particular order as I think these innovative games are all important in some aspect. Note, I have taken cues from this thread aswell:

1: Dune - first real RTS

2: Wolfenstein 3D - Hello shooters

3: The legend of Zelda - Open world exploring was done first here people!

4: Super Mario 64 - 3D done right

5: Pong - Goooooooood morning videogaming!

6: Populous - the true God-Game.

7: GoldenEye - Console FPS IS possible! with local Multi even!

8: Metal Gear Solid - the true father of stealth

9: Final Fantasy 4 - First JRPG to get everything right.

10: Wii Sports - I tend to be averse to too recent games in these sort of lists but motion controls seem to be the future and this game prooved that it is true.

11: Space Invaders - The start of the Shoot m up

12: Tetris - The first puzzle game, still played to this day.

13: Ultima online - This is the grandfather that occasionally smacks Word of Warcraft on it's head with a cane.

14: Quake - modding, online shootfests... still going on today!

15: GTA 3 - The first open world 3D game. I don't like it so much but it get's props for that.

16: Super Mario Bros - How long had we been stuck in 2D side-scrolling adventures up until SM64 was released?

17: Kung-Fu - The first one on one fighter, (though SF2 will always be more fun)

18: Shenmue - Engrossing story, unique setting and pacing... and let's not forget the - PRESS A TO DUCK NOW!! (Quick time event)

19: KoTor - If they can place Bioshock on the list for making right or wrong choices then KoTOR is far more deserving. Aswell as innovating in other fields.

20: The Ocarina of Time - Automatic jumping, Z-targeting, engrossing story and the first 3D adventure.

Games that just fell out of it in my humble opinion:

Wii Fit, Half Life, Mario Kart, Chrono Trigger, Micro-Machines, Alone in the Dark, Pokemon and Maniac Mansion
