Forums - Sony - Valve shuts out "Too Complicated" PS3

Lazy developers!!!

I thought that it used to be about making the effort with the consoles to make the games look the best they could be (at the time of creation of course) and that a challenge would be welcomed!

I for one are glad that Valve aren't making any games on the PS3 since they do not make the effort!

THey just don't care, its not about putting effort.  MOst there money is made from PC games anyways.

I like that they basically said "PS3 software doesn't sell well enough for us to bother" in the nicest way possible, and people are still butt-hurt about it.

Orange Box was UNPLAYABLE on the PS3, and moved to the bargain bins almost immediately after it hit the shelves. Meanwhile, the 360 version is still heavily played, to the point they even did an expanded Portal on Live, and now L4D is cleaning up and getting a sequal... At the rate they can churn out quality work for the 360 and turn a profit, why WOULD they waste time developing for the PS3?

Also: to those questioning if they're the only ones still having trouble: limited RAM aside, what do you all think has been the cause of PS3 multiplat games underperforming the 360 versions? It's not because it's a noticably weaker machine...

I am pretty sure the reason why they are not developping games on the PS3 is more than just because it's complicated...
They can't expect people to believe that in 2009.

It's really not that hard to believe for most with the exception of a few very vocal Sony "loyalist"

What? I think you are avoiding the subject. I looked at your previous posts and it seems you have a problem with PS3 owners anyway. So you really think the reason why Vavle is not developping games for the PS3 is because it's «too complicated»...

How am I avoiding the subject? LOL Have you read my posts pertaining to the issue? Your conclusions is supported by what?

This company is basically saying the PS3 is not a viable platform for its products because of the complicated architecture and you are doubting that based on what? Sony even insists it intentionally made the PS3 architecture difficult. Are you a Valve employee?

What grounds do you have to discredit somethig being stated by Valve? Who are you again?

And I have no problem with PS3 owners. Maybe you should do more research.

Companies want to make a profit. For Valve, complicated = more expenses. Valve does not want to deal with it...get over it.

That's why they are lazy...

You admit they are lazy right? (based on what they said in the article)

So because Valve does not want to take on extra expenses to produce products for the PS3 that tranlates to lazy? Please explain how and where did you get that idea based on what I communicated?

I am not sure what you tried to do just now, but I am very well aware of what I intend to communicate. Valve does not want to deal with the increased cost of developing for the PS3. Please, either formulate a better argument or read a book...

Toodles

You know they would make profit by releasing there games on the PS3, right? It makes you wonder why a company doesn't want more money.

I do not know anything pertaining to circumstances that have not passed yet. Lots of factors and variables go into producing a forecast model that analyzes the risk assessment of taking on new projects. I do not work at Valve, and there is no way for me to answer your question. Just as you do not work at Valve, so there is no way for you to know the answer to that question.

Business models are not as black and white as you seem to imply. What I can tell you is that whatever analysis Valve has done, it has determined that creating games for the PS3 platform is not viable financially. Valve does not want to take on the risk. It's really that simple.

Well then read my first post where I said that the reason why they are not developping games on the PS3 is more than just because it's complicated...you said it yourself.

And just so that you know...I don't really care for a PS3 version of there games since I already own L4D and CS on PC

For Valve it's more about putting out quality games. As the OP says they don't care that much about the underlying technologies, so the PS3 philosophy of working a lot to achieve the same results is not much in line with Valve's.

Valve Shuts out “Too Complicated” PS3...

At E3 while checking out Left 4 Dead 2, I had a chance to talk to a few of the game’s developers at Valve. Amongst questions about the game, I snuck in a bit asking why Valve won’t develop for the PS3. It’s not because they’re a small studio, it’s because the PS3 is too complex. Game designer Tom Leonard had this to say:

"The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward. We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform. [...] I didn’t come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish. I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun."

That’s not to say the PS3 doesn’t have some fun games, but Valve chooses to take the route of less resistance. And with Sony saying the PS3 is intentionally hard to to develop for, Valve might have a point. But I think they’re choosing the Xbox 360 because of the similar architecture and coding as PC gaming, which is their bread and butter. Either way, don’t expect Valve games to grace your PS3 anytime soon.

WOW....talk about being pathetically lazy!   Yeah, no duh....the PC and the 360 are more straight forward......because they are the exact same thing!  (Check it out,  the 360 is running a slimmed down windows kernel recompiled to run on a RISC processor. )   It's not that the PS3 is so difficult or hypercomplex.....it's just not a PC clone.   It's this kind of thinking that has made windows and the 360 stale.......the whole mind set in this part of the industry is to only do what you already know.....what is easy, and readily copied from previous versions or other people who actually created something new and original.   Hats of to Sony and Nintendo......they actually have the vision and the corporate will power to create things that are new, different, gasp...dare I say it.....even complex!

So what will Valve do when Ps3 catches up to and surpasses 360 in units sold?
