Forums - Sony - Valve shuts out "Too Complicated" PS3

Valve Shuts out “Too Complicated” PS3...

At E3 while checking out Left 4 Dead 2, I had a chance to talk to a few of the game’s developers at Valve. Amongst questions about the game, I snuck in a bit asking why Valve won’t develop for the PS3. It’s not because they’re a small studio, it’s because the PS3 is too complex. Game designer Tom Leonard had this to say:

"The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward. We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform. [...] I didn’t come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish. I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun."

That’s not to say the PS3 doesn’t have some fun games, but Valve chooses to take the route of less resistance. And with Sony saying the PS3 is intentionally hard to to develop for, Valve might have a point. But I think they’re choosing the Xbox 360 because of the similar architecture and coding as PC gaming, which is their bread and butter. Either way, don’t expect Valve games to grace your PS3 anytime soon.

Apparently he is also a prophet:

(article date) Jan. 16th, 2007 9:10 am

"Newell drop another bomb. He believes that the Nintendo Wii will win the console war.

"I’m betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I’m crazy. I really like everything that Nintendo is doing.""

And all this was just after the launch of the ps3 and wii.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Developers shouldnt be fanboys. Period.

I love these threads. PS3 fanboys that have posted that Wii owners asking for certain multi-plat games should buy an HD console now whine that Valve is lazy because they aren't supporting their platform of choice. The hypocrisy is over-whelming really. They aren't lazy. They just don't think the investment into learning the PS3 architechture is worth it. The blame lays with Sony for intentionally creating a system that is hard to maximize for whatever retarded reason.

@infamous8: Again, they didn't say they can't... they said they don't want to. They don't think it's worth it for them.

You can question the business practice, but this is not due to ignorance or laziness. They simply think their staff has more valuable things to do than PS3 ports.

Im sure it would be profitable if they released a game at the same time on Ps3 as they do for 360.

Some multiplats sell even better on Ps3 (especially this year) and the ones that don't, still sell well over a million copies. GTAIV for example sold much better on 360 but still sold over 5 million on Ps3.

I'm sure it would be profitable too, but the issue is whether or not they could make more profit by doing a PS3 port or something else.

Think of it this way, say you have 10,000 dollars to invest.  You could invest in company A where you expect to earn 10%/year on your investment, or you could invest in company B where you expect to earn 15%/year.  Where would you put your money?

Valve's position is that with their finite resources they believe they can make more money by sticking with PC/360 development than by shifting resources to start PS3 projects.

It really isn't that hard to understand if one can just manage to take off their fanboy goggles.

I FIND THIS WHOLE THREAD RATHER HUMOROUS.

When Kojima says something to the effect of, "only the PS3 can deliver the MGS4 experience I imagine," that seems to be perfectly acceptable. When Valve says something like, "we would rather focus on making the BEST GAME EXPERIENCE we can rather than focus on technological hurtles", then they are lazy.

If I were an X-Box fan, I could just as easily say, "Kojima is lazy." In fact, some people did. That was just as bigoted and wrong.

Valve is not a huge team. They cannot afford to spread too thin working on what - from their point of view - is peripheral technology. They are first and foremost PC developers. Let EA do the port if a port is to be made.

"What about when PS3 outsells 360?" Well, by then this generation would be largely irrelevant. Plus, EA can do the port. Besides, 360 and PC together will always be greater than the PS3.

"PC = piracy" Yes, but Steam is a great system to address that. The platform is there.

Most other points have already been addressed into the ground. Just let it go! It's no different than a 360 fan complaining about MGS4.

Yes Valve, please keep your games confined to 360 and PC, thanks.

Valve is an independent developer so it's not really that cost effective to place the game on the PS3 when it wont generate the kind of sales needed. Valve would have to hire a larger team in order to get a game working on the PS3. That's where EA comes in... they outsource it to some retarded dev that half ass ports the game to the PS3 :-p

Has no one on this god forsaken post played a valve game? You all sound like a bunch of little 5 year olds that have never played anything but a PS3. Valve does amazing work on EVERY single title they publish. I would like to see any developer out there today make an engine last 5 years, and still look as beautiful as it does today. The reason they don’t even want to mess with the PS3 is not because they are paid off. Sony’s platform just does not sell the games like MS or the PC can. They are a small company so why take all the time to hire a PS3 staff, almost double the development time, double the cost, and for what less sales then 360 or the PC??? Why would anyone do that?

Which BTW "paid off" has to be sony-fanboys favorite saying of this generation, cause that’s all I hear coming out of their mouths. O NO another 360 exclusive or, O it was only on PS2 before o no MS must have paid them off. Don’t blame your problems on MS all the time why don’t you look at Sony and go HAY WTF IS UP DONT LET THIS HAPPEN DO SOMETHING!! Sony has been ignoring its fan base since this gen started where as MS is actually listening. If you want a Valve game on PS3 then tell Sony to pay Valve for the development cost. (Just please for all that is holy dont let EA take it over and do what they did to the orange box OMFG NO!

"Leap ignorantly to the defense of wealthy game company’s, who don't know or care about you!"

all you PS3 owners who are whinging about how they are 'lazy' continue doing so if you really have to... Im gonna go play TF2, because Valve recently released a hue update with new maps and weapons. kthx.
