Forums - Nintendo - Wii Motion Plus Review Thread

Nice thread!

I just saw another quote from Nintendo Power which goes more to the point on the controls:

“The level of finesse made possible by Wii MotionPlus even allows for purely swing-controlled lob and drop shots, whereas playing without the peripheral requires you to hold down a button during the motion. It all works amazingly well, delivering an experience that feels far more authentic than anything else out there.” – Steve Thomason, Nintendo Power

Tiger Woods sounds like it's the best out the three games. Problem is I have no interest in golf whatsoever. Not even golf in Wii Sports let alone as a standalone £40 game. So I will go for Grand Slam Tennis (sounds like it has the upperhand against Virtua Tennis) and then get Wii Sports Resort next month for my second wii motion plus.

That's probably what I'm going to do to.

Golf is so boring... I played it like once or twice in Wii Sports. In fact the only Wii Sports game I play often is the tennis one.

In fairness, the golf in the original Wii sports was pretty atrocious--especially compared to tennis and bowling.  Not saying your interest will neccesarily be anymore piqued by Wii Motion + enhancements, but you should give it a shot when you pick up Wii Sports Resort anyway.

As a Golf fan, I couldnt be any more excited for it.  Next week I'll be watching the pros play in the US Open, while playing the same course in the same weather conditions picture in picture on my TV.  The fidelity of Wii motion + will probably keep me off the leaderboard, but I'm still excited.

I think it'll be the best way to watch the US Open outside of actually being there.

What will be the first non-sports game to use WM+?

Depending on what you define as a sports game, probably Red Steel 2.

Found this impression on another site... there are others that were equally as glowing, but this had the most detail.

"If you're at all on the fence about whether this game is all it's cracked up to be, don't even bother reading this. Get off your keester and get to the nearest retailer and buy the MotionPlus bundle. It's worth its weight in gold.

I picked it up on my lunch break from work so I only got to play for about 40 minutes, which included the tutorials and a rather rushed round at Banff Springs playing as Tiger on Standard difficulty.

Right off the bat, the MotionPlus effect is obvious. The game will track every movement you make, no matter how slight, and it shows you dynamically how you're addressing the ball. This is very helpful when you're trying to put a draw or fade on a ball and you want to get a sense for how you should have the club positioned at impact to achieve that level of curve. Unlike last year, you do not have to hold the club in the awkward position all the way through the swing. As long as you have the remote twisted at impact, the effect will work. And it works beautifully.

I can't stress enough how monumentally awesome the draw/fade mechanics are, particularly since it plays into your regular swings as well. MotionPlus allows the game to much more accurately determine the angle of the remote as you swing through, so even on Standard difficulty (and I'm sure it's much more pronounced on Advanced), you will find yourself slightly hooking and slicing things if you aren't perfectly straight. This adds great realism and welcome strategy to your tee and approach shots, because you'll probably want to err on the side of caution when dealing with your aiming to account for the possibility of an inadvertent mis-hit.

Another huge improvement is partial strength shots. As with real golf, it's quite challenging to get exactly 50 or 75 percent on a shot, but at least it's much more consistent and accurate now. Twice I was able to finesse a shot quite nicely, where in the past it was such a crap shoot that I didn't even bother trying.

Of course, the biggest difference is with the new putting system. At first, it will be very difficult to get used to, because it's so much more realistic. There is no more multiple strength putting. Now, if you hit the ball as hard as you can, it will go as far as it can, and if you hit it softly, it will go more softly. Where this becomes a big issue is on shorter putts, like from 5-15 feet. Ordinarily you're used to hitting such shots at 100% power with a 5-20 foot "power" putter. Now, you have to take a lot off of it, like you would on a real golf course. It's really amazing how intuitive it is once you start forgetting all of the unrealistic bad habits that old games have ingrained in you. I can't imagine how satisfying putting will be on Advanced mode once I get more practice in:

Anyone who finds the ease of Tiger Woods games in the past off-putting are in for a welcome change this year. I can bet that the days of shooting in the 50's on Advanced mode are over. This game feels as close to real golf as I've ever seen without getting so frustrating that you'll want to quit (like real golf can be.) An absolutely marvelous achievement from what I've played so far. Do not hesitate in picking this up, and do yourself a favor and use Precision putting. It's so much better than last year it's not even funny."

barring a delivery exception, this should be on my doorstep when i get home--i cant wait.

I'm surprised that neither IGN or Gamespot or 1up (or this place either, actually) have put up a review of Tiger Woods yet. I'd think that everyone would want to get on the WM+ thing asap.

I was at first too, but then i thought, well, they did just come off of E3...

furthermore there are 27 courses, which translates into 486 holes they need to play if they want to review the game in its entirety (which IGN usually does or at least claims they do for reviews).  Not to mention online and all of the other features included on the game...

i'm leaning towards GST but im not 100% sold yet if i shouldnt buy VT 2009 instead
