Michael Pachter, a research analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities appeared as a special guest on last weeks episode of the Bonus Round, a gaming round-table talkshow on Gametrailers.com hosted by Geoff Keighley.
In the final segment of the post-E3 special episode which aired on Sunday, Pachter predicted that Microsoft would not release an "Xbox 720" (a nickname for the next Xbox) for at least five years.
"I don't think there's any reason for another Xbox until we test the limits of these boxes," Pachter said on the show. "We're not there yet. They can keep improving this thing."
Pachter's statement came in light of a discussion about Project Natal, the newly announced full-body motion sensor with voice recognition Microsoft unveiled at E3. Natal presents a whole new way for 360 users to play games and could give game developers a new medium. Pachter said he believes that the announcement of Natal was Microsoft making a statement that they are committed to the Xbox 360 which is great news for 360 users whether they are interested in Natal or not.
When asked about a possible 720 Pachter responded, "2013 if we're lucky I'm stickin' with. If ever." If Pachter's prediction that the next console not being released for another five years comes true, it would mark the eighth year of the Xbox 360's life, close to the ten-year plan that their rival Sony boasted for the Playstation 3.
