Forums - Gaming - Edge Reviewed Halo 3, Lair, WarHawk, and PGR4

libellule have you played all these games extensively. I would bet you haven't seeing as PGR 4 is not even out yet. Ignoring your bias it is nice to see any mag review games across the spectrum. There are far too many sources that set their standards too low.

The Metroid Prime 3 score is not all that surprising. Some just aren't enamored with the concept, or play style of the series. Not a guaranteed slam dunk, but that is still a reasonable review. Lair we know many reviewers take issue with the controls, and how the game plays. What is shocking their either they obviously really did not like it.

Halo 3 getting a perfect 10 was highly likely. Not due to some insane bias. The series has a exceptional level of replay, solid controls, and pulls off multiple play scenarios perfectly. You rarely find a game that has so much variation in play style either. You get great FPS action, and ground vehicular combat, and great aerial combat. The game simply does so much so very well.

I do, looks like they demand multiplayer from the games they play. Hence why Bioshock/Prime 3 are getting counted down, and Halo 3/PGR are rated so highly. Remember they also gave Warhawk an 8, a multiplayer online only game. Seems obvious to me that's simply having or not having online play is a major part of their scoring criteria. Also explains why Two Worlds is a 4, and a Lair is a 3. From what I read, they're both pretty lousy, but Two Worlds is lousy online, and therefore one point better. =P

It should be noted that Edge has only given out 6 previous 10/10 scores...

Super Mario 64, Grand Turismo, Grand Turismo (PAL), Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time, Halo, and Half-Life 2...

@tabsina   I completely agree; why all reviewers say about Wii games "oh it's got nice graphics, but nothing against PS3/Xbox360 XXX game" but never downgrade Xbox360/PS3 games for having inferior (if they indeed have, sometimes Wii controls are plain bad) control? They think controls are not so important?

I feel a game should be reviewed based on the features in the package, not the features that the reviewers would like it to have in the package.  If it is a single player game then it should be scored as a single player game and noted in the review that there is no online or multiplayer.  Just because it is single player, does not mean it can only get up to a 7 or 8...  And if it is a Wii game it should be scored based on the graphical benchmark of the Wii, not the 360 or PS3...

Also, scoring Lair.  I found Lair to be difficult to control, but the sound is fine, the idea is unique, the graphics are great, etc.  I wouldn't expect it to get below a six even in the harshest reviews.  Especially, since Two Worlds has technical flaws everywhere and its online stinks but scored a four.  I don't think Two Worlds which is technically flawed everywhere should score as high Lair which was delivered as intended with insignificant technical flaws.

EDGE like any other review site is just another subjective opinion on games. Whoever the reviewer(s) are obvious likes some sorts of games, and dislikes other types.

Another reason why I like IGN.

Look at the gamerankings scores for Metroid, Bioshock & Halo 3: (approx) 91%, 95%, 95%.

IGN scores: 9.5, 9.7, 9.5
EDGE scores: 7, 7(?), 10

(if multiplayer is so important - how did SM64, Zelda, Gran Turismo all get a 10?)

(PS - the lowest score Metroid has received so far - from around 40 publications - is 80%...)

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Who cares about what the Edge has to say anyway ??? He´s the guitarist of U2 for crying out loud... why would I care what he thinks about videogames ??? Now Slash on the otherhand... he writhes reviews I can trust....

I'm going to take a wild guess and say thier reviewing process and probably thier reviewers as well were different 9 years ago. =P

I decided to push my theory a little further and observed FFT: War of Lions getting a 9 and a Singstar (PS3) getting an 8. Since I'm not overly familar with either one, took a quick peak at Wikipedia. And saw a couple of sentances that caught my attention for both. For FFT: Lions I found this.

"Another development added to the game is a wireless multiplayer mode, both for co-op and versus play."

And for Singstar. (PS3)

My SingStar Online is the online component of SingStar. The idea for My SingStar Online was inspired by people uploading photos and videos of SingStar parties to websites such as Flickr and YouTube.

All purely circumstanal evidence of course, but it does feel like that have a bias for multiplayer and a bias against games without it. Correct me if I’m wrong but, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 (7), Eternal Sonata (7), and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations (6) are all pure single player experiences correct?

From what I’ve seen, Edge’s harsh reviews (as of current) seem to only apply to single player games for the most part.

Metroid gets put down for not being competitive graphics-wise with 360 as well as being a part of a trilogy

Halo doesn't move for having inferior fps controls to Wii as well as being part of a trilogy..

I just don't think there is much consistency with the thought processes of a lot of reviewers (i'm not talking about EGM, since all we have is a score without reasoning atm)

Yeah, that's not fair at all.  In my opinion, Metroid Prime 3's controls are more significant than Halo 3's graphics.
