Forums - Sony - So compared to other PS1 Final Fantasy's how does FFIX compare?

I would definitely recommend FFIX to you if you played the other PS1 FF because I can honestly say its better than VIII and it would compare very favorably to VII. VI still ranks above them both and X is ps2. But IX would rank above X for sure if you want to go that far

My favorite FFs go like this: X, VII, VIII, XII, then IX. It just wasn't my thing. I only played through about 2/3s of it.

FF9 is a great game. It has great characters, a good story, good music, and a fun battle system. Also i really like the atmosphere of the game.

FF9 is a classic. It's my 2nd favorite Final Fantasy and I've played FF7 through FF12. FF7 was my first and still stands as my favorite.

Its really a shame to not play this game due to the less mature looking art style and comedic characters. Those characters end up having much more personality and I remember them way more than the recent cookie cutter offerings of FF12. I think I could name every main character from 9, a game which I played almost 10 years ago, but I couldn't name and barely remember the characters from 12 which I played less than 3 years ago.

Let's see:

Vivi, Steiner, Garnet, Zidane, Quina, Freya, Amarant and Eiko.

vs Vaan, Basch, Balthier, Fran.... yep I forgot the rest. Sorry FF12 fans it just wasn't as memorable for me.

I loved the setting and the medieval steam-punky cartoon world. brilliant story too, imo
It's my favorite FF, closely followed by XII and VI

Very underrated. Of the PS1 FF's, IX is certainly my favorite and ranks really high on my list when it comes to FF in general. I really liked the setting, story and music. I'd recommend trying it out. And yes it has one of the best overworld themes ever (I miss overworld maps in jrpgs now a days)

FFIX is good, VIII is garbage, and VII is insanely overrated (I would say one of the most overrated games *ever*).

thats so true.

Yeah, the characters in XII are so terrible.  You have about as much reason to like them as they have to be in the game but that's another topic and I shouldn't get into that argument again and completely derail the thread.
