Forums - General - Motivating oneself

I'm starring at VGchartz now, typing this post but 2 minutes ago I was staring at my thesis. I have about two months to complete it, my theory is coming along nicely, my data is in and now I'm trying to do some work on another theory-section but damn it, I just constantly loose the motivation to type. I sit here, stare at an article, get sleepy and go out to do other things like the dishes, vacuum-cleaning, gaming, chatting to people or just stare out the window. On the plus side, my house has never been cleaner. Downside, I don't get the fucking work done despite being on course, I think.

Do you people have any tips on how to motivate yourself for schoolwork on a sunday-night?

I need help aswell.

Hook yourself up to a cattle prod. Anytime you stray off course, flip the switch and give yourself a nice ZAP!

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

you should just realise why you're doing it in the first place.

then realise theres only one person thats ever going to get that process done.

then think about what happens if you don't get it done, or do it well enough.

never think about that again. just get it done, because you know why youre doing it.

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

Why I'm doing it - because it's awesome having msc behind your name, otherwise it's just bsc.

Problem is, due to the bahcelor-master structure now I already have my bachelor and I'm already sort of qualified to become a true consultant. That's perhaps where the lack of motivation is coming from, it isn't all that necessary. My parents are proud irregardless, I'm already asked for the jobs I want... The only person I might let down is my thesis guide

I go somewhere with no Internet and no distraction to work. Usually a coffee shop or the library is good. Cuts out 99% of distractions because you can exactly procrastinate by vacuuming and so on.

Remind yourself why you are writing your thesis and what you want to do.

Think about how miserable you'll be one week before the deadline if nothing or almost nothing is done. Been there, done that.

Trust me, you don't want to be in that situation. So allocate a time for tomorrow (a few hours in the afternoon, or morning if that's your thing) and no matter what, work during those hours. Get something done.

One thing which can help is to make a TO DO list, if you can break down your work into parts. Then you can start scratching off things as soon as you do them, which makes you have a measurable way of looking at your progress. It also feels nice to eliminate yet another line from the list.

Don't do work at home. Go outside, somewhere that's not crowded, and you'll be forced to just work, with no tv, no comfortable furniture (bed, sofa, etc), etc to distract you.
