Forums - Microsoft - Are we even worthy of Natal?

I mean really.  Look at this technology.  It's the body tracking system from Total Recall, the in air touch screen from Minority Report, and a movie studio Green Screen rolled into one.  All of this R & D and potential that could be used for security systems, intelligent robots, or something that can better the world, and we're  using it to play VIDEO GAMES?  I feel somewhat guilty.

Lol.

PS: It is not the Minority report touch screen unless they add a holographic projector.

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

If you can afford it then yes, you are worthy.

To be honest I'm more than worthy. If anything I'm wondering why these things take so long to arrive. The tech for such stuff has been around for quite a while with decent SW support too. As ever its only when someone makes money with innovation (hello Nintendo) that you see it get the full push from all parties.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

There are very few companies which have had the opportunity, money and expertise to really pull this off. Natal is pretty much a combined effort from half of Microsofts so far useless research and development (An obvious exageration lol).

Always politely demand more... is my motto.  Well, one of them anyway.  As a big fan of text based adventures what I really want Pete to do is deliver a 3D world using the Natal interface for the purpose of adventure gaming with minimal or even no combat.  I'd by a 360 then.  Actually, in most cases I find (working for a large SW company myself) that a lot of the innovation, etc. come from small companies formed by smart folks from places like M.I.T. etc which are then bought by the large SW companies so they remain large SW companies - making the smart people very rich and able to bugger off living happy, smart lives away from the grind while the rest of us (myself included) get down to taking their great work and making it more widely available and popular - i.e. actually selling it.

Sheesh... kind of depressing what I do now that I look at it from than angle, thank goodness I'm paid well.

Your wish is likely being granted several times over most likely. An adventure game seems like the perfect fit for the interface because its a genre designed to have you touch and explore the surroundings in an almost physical way. The avatar on screen is really just a surrogate to your own hands. Point, touch, examine its pretty much the natural result of such an interface as Wii Sports seems like the perfect result of the Wiimote's existance.

Its kind of ironic that the guy responsible for games which use a hand as a cursor (Dungeon Keeper, Black and White) and has created games which already have a form of gesture interface (Black and White) should have this technology fall into his lap. I would be extremely surprised if we didn't see Black and White 3 as a launch title for this interface. Heck if you go back through Lionheads release schedule they have to have at least two teams working at once, the second team is due for a game release and if that game is Black and White 3, thats an amazing coincidence.

Btw, with the name Natal do you see another meaning as well? Because the word natal also pertains to birth. I don't really see it as being named after a city, I think its more named for the act of childbirth or being born. With so many metaphors it'd be a brilliant marketing name too. Xbox Natal (Xbox birth) or Xbox 360 birth (Xbox comes full circle and then reborn) its pretty awesome really.

Im glad you're well paid, because im not. Students never are! I don't see why Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony don't see how brilliant I am and why they don't just come and hire me. Im like available!

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
