Forums - Nintendo - Is Metroid: The Other M Considered First-Party or Third-Party?

Team Ninja should work alongside Nintendo more often.

I say 2nd party. 1st party + 3rd party/ 2 = 2nd party.

Itagaki names Nintendo game as inspiration for Ninja Gaiden work, offers kind words for Team Ninja's Metroid project
June 6, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general
A portion of a 1up interview with developer Tomonobu Itagaki...

1UP: Do you feel that your work on the Ninja Gaiden franchise owes anything to what Devil May Cry started on PS2?

TI: Nope. I actually owe thanks to the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

1UP: How do you feel about the Team Ninja-doing-Metroid-reinvention news? Is this something you would have welcomed when you were still there?

TI: Metroid is a fantastic game that I played a lot on the Disk System when I was a child. I also know Mr. Sakamoto, the producer at Nintendo, very well. He fathered Samus Aran. He's been making games since I was a child, so he's a veteran I really respect. I think [Yosuke] Hayashi will learn a lot working with him. I hope Team Ninja works hard in making a good game.

Its first/second party (depending upon how you classify such).

Nintendo does a lot of "farming out" of its franchises. A lot of Mario Party and Mario Sports games are made by other developers (Hudson, Namco, etc.). So this is really nothing new.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

it's Metroid: Other M not "The Other M"

OT: it is first party as it is funded by Nintendo

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Generally (at least from what I understand) Nintendo only sees it as 1st party and 3rd party. 1st party is anything they publish, and 3rd party is anything other people publish. There is no talk of 2nd party and the line is drawn by who publishes it.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

It's just a fact of life, but as long as there is Mario, Metroid will always be "The Other M".

its second party

its just like outsourcing work, you still own it but you just get someone else to do it

a bit off topic but what is Retro working on now ?

I think the line between first and second party is so fuzzy, it might as well not exist.

I don't think it's fuzzy at all. First party is for developers owned entirely by Nintendo, second party is for developers under contract making a game for Nintendo with exclusive rights.

The only potential fuzzy line is between second and third parties, since by the definition above Team Ninja can be a third party at times, and a second party at other times.
