Forums - Microsoft - Is Forza 2 proof that the 360\'s DVD format is finally falling behind?

@ HappySqurriel

It probably is still much cheaper to users/developers to print multiple DVDs over a single Blu-Ray disc ...

At small production runs of 10K, we are talking about just ~$1.44 for a Blu-Ray disc vs about a dollar for two DL DVDs. That's very little compared to retail pricing.

Two discs also require more costs with regard to handling and casing. It's not that significant really.

I believe it has already been confirmed that the game will have two discs. I believe one of the Gran Turismos was on multiple discs way back when.

The second disc is not one that needs to be swapped traditionally. Instead it holds installation data required for the game. This also does mean that any 360 owner without a harddrive will not be able to play it unfortunately. It seems to just be the direct equivalent to a PS3 mandatory game install.

THE GOOD

Better loading times

ALWAYS - do you even know how X360 dvds are formatted ?

Less expensive to end users
Less expensive to developers

YES - you conveniently forgot the drivers required to read discs and the costs of producing more/less content + switching costs for developpers new to blu-ray

God i hate fanboys, almost as much as they hate facts

DVD has been showing it's age for quite some time now. This particular piece of information means two things...

1. 360 may be going towards mandatory installs for certain games of a higher demand for power. This means all that install bashing for the PS3 will be coming to an end very soon.

2. It means that yet again, DVD is not able to contain everything the 360 developers want to put into it's games. For a racing game to be pushed to multiple discs is not a good thing(it was only tolerable when GT did it because it was so profound). We are in like the 6th gen and we are detracting back to multiple disc racing games?

For your information, the game is one disc.....the second disc is a data transfer....I don't understand what the big deal is? It aint any different from the game installs Ps3 fans gotta go through. Yes....Blu-Ray is a better format, but you act like you too lazy to get up and swap a disc.

You don't have to install the second disc, but you can't use all of the cars or tracks without it.
