With a thread title "Difference Between Natal & New PS3 Motion Control"
I'd say we wait for them to come out..

I see your point as PS3 motion control was actual demo of the technology, but Natal had its demo as well and supposedly Burnout Paradise (Racing) control and Richot were proven to actually work. here is kotaku, http://kotaku.com/5279531/microsoft-project-natal-can-support-multiple-players-see-fingers
But at the same time, I can see promo video part may or may not turn out to be true. One example is PS Eye http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwwbkzEACws&feature=related The link above was promo for PS Eye before it was released. It showed detection precision to the level of fingers. (middle of the clip with guy making gun like hand sign.) |
First off, respect points for you preparing yourself for people like me
That promo video is over three years old! And for Microsoft to pull one of their own out THREE years later!.........meh ...gets you thinking.

Rackets, swords, handle bards, wheels, fishing poles.... Natal does away with the idea of the input being a tool and instead captures the motion. In essence Natal is all about interaction in a natural level. For example if I were to use the PS3Motion as a paintbrush it's weight is all wrong, the handle is all wrong. With natal I could use the motion or I can use a real paintbrush. Your perception of Natal and PS3Motion is all about the enthusiasts technical perspective, but from a perspective of the strategy they are different. |
Just for a bit counter argument. Without controller or thing to hold, I would say you may contradict yourself. For instance, the painting demo that Sony did. For me it is more natural to have something in my hand, in the example, controller as Paint Spray than simply holding nothing and make hand motion for it. Same for sword or wheels. I feel more natural to Hold Sword Or at least something, or hold a wheel than holding nothing and make my hand to look as if I am holding.
Then as you brought up, in natal you can hold actual painbrush. This may or may not be true, but let's say it's true. If we get into that level of peripheral, you may essentially end up buying peripheral for everything thing. So I'd rather have one standard (like Wiimote), and have a little attachment as option in case we want to feel a bit more natural about it.
Would you consider "air guitar" more natural than "guitar hero guitar"?

Good catch!! I'll edit my opening post.
But here is counter argument, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58hfb9ZxzK8&NR=1
In case you don't understand Japanese, it says this technology divides human face into 500 points and analyze based on it.
people will start Quoting me on this:
Even kids have to have something in their hands when they play in the back yard.

Well to counter argue with that.......
I guess nothing to counter here.. Well, at least I quoted you!
First, I have all 3 so I am pretty much resigned to purchasing all of the peripheral IF it can be shown that they add to the experience.
Natal seems to be to be the weakest as it is not really for gaming. Plus the "tech demo" i.e. scripted video they showed showed only one person being targeted/monitored at any time (racing, pit stop car changing) and did "not" seem like fun. This could mean additional hardware purchase for multiplayer and if it is $200 it would be a hard sell meaning no game support.
Wii Motion Plus attachment is going to be out this year but there is already talk that Wii HD may be around the corner so unless it is going to be forward compatible I do not see a whole lot of games taking advantage of it.
PS3 motion control seems to be somewhere in between wii motion plus and Natal but in my opinion it offers functionality from both types. With the camera even without the use of "Wand" you should be able to mimic stuff from minority report as a new UI.
The use of a wand type controller in games has already been demonstrated via Wii so that can be done as well.
However, IMO the motion control is really not for every genre and seems good for casual gamers (read short gaming sessions) mostly. The genre's I enjoy (RPG) would be too tiring with flailing my arms around for hours unless they do something creative with it. I am not sure how that would pan out.

I asked in another thread, but no one gave me any responses, so I'll ask again here.
Can anyone give me any practical uses of Natal that can't be done on the PS Eye or Wii? Yes, the Burnout demo works, but does it make the game BETTER? Who here would actually use Natal's motion controls over a regular controller or a real race wheel?
There are a lot of people on this forum who appear to be very excited about the prospects of Natal. So I'm curious, are you guys excited because it appears to be very advanced technology or are you excited because of real gameplay opportunities that I haven't thought of yet? Because while the technology seems pretty cool, I fail to see any real gameplay advantages over the Wii or PS Eye.
So please, enlighten me. Anyone.
@OP:
Even if only actual games will tell us all we need, your comparison was quite useful and clear to me, thanks.
