Forums - Microsoft - Xbox 360 to receive hard drive upgrades soon!

It would be nice if they started offering more and cheaper options for the HDD, I only have a 20gb and I would love to upgrade it but its just too expensive, $120 for 120GB and $60 for the 60GB is a little expensive. Especially when you can get 500GB externals for under $100.

Can't you pick a better title if this is just blind speculation?

Gotta get people's attention don't I?

Also, it's not just blind speculation.  There were many reasons and past examples to provide more support to this being a possibility.

I'll see if a mod can edit the title to add "to 'possibly' recieve" if that helps

It's par for the course on this site, I guess...  You'll see "Metal Gear Solid 4 annoucned for the 360!!", and the first post is "Du u think dis will happen at TGS?" so you actually have a fairly solid thread here by comparison.  The way you wrote it was a straight up announcment, though, so I jumped right in here and was like "firmware, or yet another hard drive, or...  Oh...  wait..."

Those externals are standard 3.5" drives.  The 360 uses notebook 2.5" drives.  Those are a bit more expensive.  I think a 320GB is about $80-90 and a 500GB is from $100-140.  So obviously MS has room to upgrade hard drives and lower prices.  That's been one of my biggest gripes about them.

Luckily I was able to land a 120GB for $80 on eBay, then sell the data tarnsfer kit and 20GB hard drive for about $80 combined... thus making a $0 upgrade

@Steve
I've very sorry to dissappoint you   I would change the title if I could, but mods can only close it, not edit the title.

If all they used are notebook HDDs, why dont they allow me to change it out like I can and did on my PS3,  cause I got a 500GB 2.5" for $95.  I thought they were something different and thats why it was so much more expensive.

MS wants to make money on HDDs as a way to subsidize Xbox 360 price drops. How much better off would Sony had been if they had done something similiar?  Right now with the PS3 when you upgrade a HDD Sony makes nothing.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Halo ODST will save everyone around 2 GB worth of space thanks to all the maps being on disc. That's a big deal on a 20gb drive.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Their HD prices are highway robbery, as far as I am concerned they better drop their expectations on $$ per GB...

Frankly I can understand how reaping money from accessories is appealing for a console maker but when such accessory is an enabler for a wealth of services like videos, XBLA games, 360 games (soon available), etc... it looks like a short-sighted decision.

Because so few people are willing and able to do that, so they have absolutely no incentive to give a crap about you wanting to do it yourself. Because the ability to change the HDD without reading a manual or using a screwdriver set you may not have is far more valuable to a majority of people so an Xbox 360 60GB HDD upgrade is worth more than being able to do it yourself and Microsoft profits from that, just as Nintendo profits from the fact that the Wii is more than the sum of its parts.

Yes because giving the consumer a choice instead of handcuffing them and profitting from it is a bad thing.   Right, why didnt I think of that.

i agree, i hope they use 120hdd,250 and 350hdd releases for this games on demand service.
