It occurred to me today that just five years ago downloading games onto your console simply did not exist, no company offered a download service in any significant way. But as we know with the recent announcement of the PSPgo at E3, Sony have dropped physical media all together in favour of intangible downloads. It occurs to me that this is a rather large step that has happened in just a few years. I believe that the future wil lead down this path and soon next gen consoles or later titerations of current consoles will favour downloads over physical games.
The advantages are numerous
- It's cheaper to distribute.
- It's faster and easier to distribute games this way.
- Consoles can be made cheaper and more reliable due to no physical media slots.
- It will allow for smaller and lighter consoles.
