Forums - Gaming - Malstrom: NATAL (or as he calls it, the MS Phatom will never be released)

If it does come out. I bet you won't be able talk to your console or have it scan you skateboard or anything like that.

Actually it makes sense that it wont be released, people are saying $200 for the camera, that won't have any market penetration at that price, by the time it gets to a price cheap nough to hit the market, it'll be the next generation.

Which is perfect for MS. That's when this camera SHOULD be released. It should be packed into the next Microsoft console. That is how it can disrupt the market. It cannot do it by being attached to the 360.

Yes, where is the Microsoft Surface?

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Those two things are quite simple really.  And have nothing to do with what the real technology behind the camera is about.  Even the PS Eye could do those things.

Malstrom is a fucking nitwit, and Peter Molyneux isn't any phantom.

Maelstrom jumped the shark a long time ago.

It was released in 2008.

@JaggedSac

I don't remember the PS Eye allowing you to control the PlayStation with voice commands or scan random non-bar-coded possessions in a 'Aliens' type fashion.

It's funny how directly under this article we see one from Malstrom with the title "Microsoft is responding to Sony, not Nintendo". Well if this technology isn't a response to Nintendo (they even made a remark against the Wii during it) then what was it?  Also in that article he states that he thinks Microsoft's avatars were aimed at Sony's Home rather than the Wii's Miis.  Ok imagine that we didn't already know that Rare was working on the avatars even before the Wii came out (Kotaku), does anyone honestly think they were directed at the hardcore audience on Sony's Home rather than the casual audience on the Wii?

its a challenge to the PlayStation Eye.

The Live Vision Camera was a reaction to the PSEye. Natal is clearly about bringing the sharks into Nintendo's blue ocean. Nobody gives a shit about challenging the PSEye anymore. Sony doesn't even give a shit about it anymore, so why should anyone else?

I am not saying that it currently does, just saying that the only hardware to perform those actions is a camera and a mic.  Which the PS Eye has.  It would just take someone writing software for it.

@JaggedSac

You could say the same about Artificial Intelligence.
