So Wikipedia is a credible source now, and a factor that should be weighed above all other facets of reality? If they present one view on something that must be the only view and of course the agreed upon view right? In fact Wikipedia seems to not really so much support or dismiss your claims but really just show that the game was popular for unanmed reasons.

Or were you just hoping to intimidate me with a giant wall of quoted text?

That text backs up what I said and has lots of links as well.  So you lost this one, better luck next time.

Why is thread talking about Tomb Raider? I thought it was about whether Nintendo saved the gaming industry back in the mid 80s.

You're new to this internet forum thing aren't you?

I can tell; you expect threads to be about what's in the title.

Heh. True, now we're talking about how accurate Wikipedia is vs a 15 year old game no one can truly remember.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

"Obviously you have no clue what you're talking about with the game so maybe you should just drop it. If it was only breasts it wouldn't have gotten a 90-93% on Gamerankings. Hell if it's all just about breasts please explain why Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball got a 73.2% or it's sequel got a 53.6%, they had a lot more breasts on display than Tomb Raider ever did. A game doesn't have a sequel as anticipated as Tomb Raider 2 was if it was breasts attached to a poor or average game that was selling it. And as far as it being the breasts that hooked people, I played the game and didn't give a damn about her breasts. My girlfriend at the time played it as well and is straight so the breasts weren't what got her hooked on the game either."

Dude.

1. Calm down. I'm allowed to have an opinion on a game that's different than yours. Vice-Versa.
2. If you were reading any of the gaming media at the time, they might as well have been calling it "A REVOLUTION IN BREASTS!"
3. I stated like twice times that I wasn't asserting how good the level-design, etc. was - I was commenting on the controls and the mass-market hooks. I maintain that point as it IS something I can comment, having played it enough to get a sense of the controls and having read the media coverage at the time.
4. Also - Final Fantasy VIII got at least that good of an average on gamerankings, and it's a flat-out terrible game.

"The Lara Croft character was prominently featured in the popular media outside the realm of video gaming, for instance on the cover of cutting-edge pop culture magazine The Face in June 1997."

Read my point #2. And remember, I'm not talking about hardcore gamers who can look past difficult controls, I'm talking about your average joe-schmoe on the street.

so when you say that studios are losing money I most agree, big part of that money was developing games for a nintendo console.

Do you live under a rock?  Several financial reports from the 3 most recent quarters has atributed their increase in revenue or profit to Nintendo and the DS/Wii.

You're one of those people that think 3rd party software doesn't sell well on Nintendo consoles.  What you, and others, fail to realize is although Nintendo software sells the best it's by no means the ONLY software selling well.

At E3, Reggie revealed 14 of the top 20 best selling gams on Wii are 3rd party and that half of all units sold are 3rd parties.  So please stop buying into that perpetuated crap from Sony fanboys that 3rd party software can't sell on Nintendo hardware.

Tomb Raiders appeal above and beyond "just another decent game" was breasts. If it was a good game, it was a good game, but that doesn't change the fact that the one factor that kept it from being just another good game was the main character's feminine appeal. That does not mean that one much be a victim of this appeal to enjoy the game, but there is no arguing Tomb Raiders popularity above and beyond similar quality games thrived largely during that brief window when triangle polygon boobs could be considered "hot".

Well lets see what Wikipedia has for the game's reception and you tell me if it sounds like "just another decent game" with breasts to you.

From Wikipedia:

"Upon its release in 1996, Tomb Raider was widely praised by gaming magazines for its revolutionary graphics, inventive gameplay, and involving storyline.[10][11] The level of sophistication Tomb Raider reached by combining state-of-the-art graphics, an atmospheric soundtrack, and a cinematic approach to gameplay was at the time unprecedented.[12] The resulting sales were consequential, topping the British charts a record three times,[7] and contributing much to the success of the PlayStation.[13] In the previous year, Eidos Interactive had recorded a nearly $2.6 million in pre-tax loss. The success of the game turned this loss into a $14.5 million profit in only a year.[14]

As one of the top selling games of the PlayStation console, it was one of the first to be released on PlayStation's Platinum series, and its success made Tomb Raider II one of the most anticipated games of 1997. In 1998, Tomb Raider won the Origins Award for Best Action Computer Game of 1997.[15] The Lara Croft character was prominently featured in the popular media outside the realm of video gaming, for instance on the cover of cutting-edge pop culture magazine The Face in June 1997.

Nevertheless, Tomb Raider received some criticism for minor camera and object glitches,[16] as well as its difficult save system.[4] Additionally gamers complained at the lack of action in favor of puzzle solving, although ironically, Tomb Raider II would be criticized for its over abundance of violence, especially against human opponents."

You think the game magazines would have commented on her breasts? The comment was clearly about why CONSUMERS bought the game (I may or may not have, but I got a PS1 after the series wound down).

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Normally I just lurk around these forums but I had to get in on this one.

Legend11 you totally fail in this thread, it seems your history books are different from everybody else’s. Tell me if I am wrong, but was there not a video game crash in 1984?

Since you like to quote wikipedia as a reputable source, here chew on this

“The crash lasted for two years, during which there were many expressed doubts about the long-term viability of video game consoles. The market was revitalized in part due to the success of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Game_Crash

Hate to sound like I am attacking you, but it seems like you have not even done enough research, to back up ur argument, thus making you sound a little ignorant. Sorry but you get a U grade for this thread son! You must be young to be talking like that.

Here's food for thought

You never know where you are going till you know where you’ve been.

If you love video games, then at least learn some of its history. Nintendo is obviously not ur pick for this gen but lets not use that as something to be ignorant of the truth, the information is out there, if you look, you u shall find

p.s. and yes one of the biggest attraction for Lara in her day to gamers were her breasts! Though I did like the concept of the game, I remember the controls being very clunky!!!
