Microsoft has their established shooter franchise, Halo, FACT. And they damn near have the shooter market with it. Not only that, they have Gears of War too, and thats massive too. But the other markets are what they should be going for. Since they don't technically own Mass Effect, they only have Fable as their staple RPG series. And while Fable is sublime, its not exactly the end all be all First Party RPG franchise they need. Mass Effect is, but again, they don't own it. Action hack-n-slash series. They had a perfect franchise with Ninja Gaiden. But what do you know, they didn't own that either. So...do they have anything else in that department? Puzzler. Braid isn't their's either. Multiplayer....Halo, Gears, duh... JRPG. Sony had Final Fantasy, and Microsoft should look at what that did for them. MS needs a JRPG series. For the sake of Tales, I'd say they don't need them(unless they would actually MARKET IT. Lord knows Namco doesn't.) They need to create a JRPG franchise for their console. Racer...yeah, yeah, Forza. How about something from Simbin? Something that doesn't suck maybe? Platformer. They've tried, give em credit for that...but again...nothin'. Alan Wake. Do Microsoft actually own Alan Wake? I don't think they do. We have yet to see anything about it, but lets face it...Remedys behind it. It could become their staple Survival Horror series. Fighter. If Killer Instinct comes out, the've got their fighter. Strategy. Rise of Nations. Age of Empires. Halo Wars. Now just put them on a console. Fight. WTH happened to Crimson Skies? Am I missing some genres? Regardless, MS needs to think outside the box with their GAMES and make some spectacular new staple series that aren't just 'good'. They need to be fantastic. Sony sure as hell did with the Playstation, Nintendo did too, with the exception to some genres. |
Yup, Forza 2 sucks so bad it sold 4 million copies. It's a damn good rival to Gran Turismo. Not saying it's better, but a good rival.

Forza is a fantastic racer, no question. But Racepro from SimBin sucked, despite Simbin being one of the greatest Race simulator devs out there. So I'm saying how about something from them that doesn't suck?

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.
@Shadowblind
I think your perspective is a little too rigid.
JRPG Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon. Both are decent games, and both look to be exclusive series for the platform. They are also two of the better selling titles in the genre this generation. Hell according to this sight Lost Odyssey is trumping Dragon Quest on the consoles.
Platforming titles they have a few Conker, Banjo-Kazooie, Kameo, and even Crackdown. Remember not being built around a cute plushy doesn't mean it isn't about jumping between platforms.
Are puzzle games a mainstream genre. I would consider them in the same genre as other. Along with timing games, world simulators, board games, and card games. Not saying those are not needed, but does Microsoft need to answer this call. I just do not see this needing to be addressed. Not when they could fill out more popular genres.

I can't believe I read that so wrong. Sorry.
Another megaton would be : Today we announce Square enix and Epic games are now part of Microsoft game studios, that would be a mindblowing announcement for certain.

My point is to be rigid. MS has all the genres on their system-- but think back to the PS1/2 days. Sony had some of the best damn stuff of every genre. Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, MGS, Tekken, God of War, KH, GT and after they monopolized those genres on their console they went to a more creative and innovative route, creating games like ICO, Jak and Daxter and Ratchet & Clank.
If Microsoft wants to garner the kind of support that Ninty and Sony have, they need to be as proficient in procuring and creating titles that aren't just GOOD in every genre, they have to be FANTASTIC. Microsoft has done this almost perfectly with shooters. They damn near did it with RPGs as well last gen with titles like KOTOR, Elder Scrolls, Fable, and Jade Empire.
Ask me...they should buy Bethesda, lol.
