Fastest pre-selling game in history

With less than 24 hours to go before the game's launch, Microsoft has reported that it has already sold more than 1.5 million copies of Halo 3 in the US.

"The excitement and demand for ‘Halo 3’ has transcended a typical video game release and we’re preparing dedicated registers for its midnight release in our 24-hour stores,” said Darin Dickson, video game merchandise buyer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. “It’s clear that this is one of the most anticipated games of the year and that 12:01 am Sept. 25 will be a memorable moment for thousands of gamers.”

As previously reported, approximately 10,000 US retailers will be open at midnight, with special events taking place in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Miami."

I cant remember being more excited to hear about hardware than this upcoming week.

So, 2,000,000 units sold for day 1 will be easily achieved. Bungie must be like *~* moneeey

I am curious as to others thoughts on what would be considered a dissapointment for first week US sales. If sales were less than 2 million would that be a dissapointment? What about 2.5 or even 3 million?

Tyler, your going to get 1m various opinions on what would of constituted a dissapointment for H3's first week sales.

On one hand, Halo 3 didn't have the advantage of a 10m+ Xbox userbase when it came out. It's total US sales are under 70% of that. Therefore, one could assume it'd garner 70% of the sales, or so, of Halo 2 in it's first week.

On the other hand, supposedly everyone bought the X360 for H3 already, and no one will buy a X360 for Halo, so it should get most of it's sales within the first 2 weeks, and should do 3m+.

I'm on the idea that Halo 3 would of been disappointing if it did under 1.3m first week. I think Halo 3 will have good legs, considering the opening, and have a better multiplier vs. Halo2, merely because the X360 has had H3 launch earlier in it's lifespan, and is selling quite a bit better, YOY versus the Xbox.

So if Halo 3 sells over 2.5m - Halo 2's first week numbers - I will be very, very happy. Simply because I think from now until Christmas, it'll do gangbuster numbers every week, and not dip below 100k at any week until Christmas is over. If that happens - think about it, we still have around 14 or 15 weeks until Christmas is over. Half of those weeks could be above 200k. That's alot of freaking units of Halo.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

anything above 2.2 mil is a huge success in my books for first week, thats a 20# attachment rate on just week 1, and the following weeks included i see it dong another mil ending around 3.5 for the year would be a huge success

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

Well its obviously going to sell more then two Million units on launch day/week, but how high can it go? Concievably 3 Million Units would be where I'd cap it.

My guess is 2.3 Million Copies Sold opening week, talk about a crazy attach rate right off the bat.

Impressive

IMO, I think it could hit 3m worldwide this week, give or take.

2.3-2.5m in the US, and 500k elsewhere, maybe more.

Japan should be 50k.

UK should be around 100-200k first week, I can't remember where H2 wound up at (but it did wind up with 600k or more there).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Apparently 4.2 million copies have been shipped for the first week.
