It is a flop, it havent been used by any other device then PSP, Studios have dropped it as well.

Why would any other device use it?  It's a media to hold PSP games and PSP movies.  It doesn't make sense logically for any non-PSP device to use it.  Does any other device use the Nintendo DS cartridge for anything?  I guess that's a flop too then.

The UMD never had a chance in the first place. It is cute and stuff to have a small disc, but games that small (the biggest I saw was like 4 gb), could be digitally distributed.

DS games are usually no more than 100 mb big.  I could download a DS game in a matter of seconds.  I don't see anyone bashing the DS cartridge.

I take it you didn't read the other posts. It's been a pretty clear distinction that the UMD was targeted as a broad media device. Similar to that of an SD card for MP3 players. Where as the DS Cartridge had one goal a means to be a dynamic data change for DS software. The UMD was built to create a market. Where as the DS Cartridge isn't trying to create a market. So in the manner that Sony and Nintendo use there mediums. Yes UMD did not achieve the DVD like performance they wanted. Where as the DS cartridge never was never in that market to begine with. Sony UMD failed, Nintendo DS cartridge didn't fail or suceed.

In the field where Sony was using the UMD for game storage that is another matter. It did what it was supposed to. The problem isn't so much that. It's the fact that the PSPgo isn't going to have a UMD which now puts into question was the UMD for the PSP a success at all? The DS GBA slot was a failure in that a majority of non gamer core never used it. Thus it is now removed from the DSi. While Sony is saying they will continue to support the PSP-3000... this is often a delay tactic by many companies. Much like the DSi light was released in Japan, but North America only saw the matt silver DS Lite release. Nintendo wanted to push it's last potential sales before releasing the DSi. So Sony is with good likely hood is going to finish and encourage the current games to be released. This should then trickle down to only a few. The slow progression of lack of new games compared against an increase of PSPgo games. Will have people not realize a slow fade out of the PSP-UMD erea.

But then again, They did say that they won't do away with UMD.

Despite reports that retailers are cutting back on UMD movie stock, Koller remains optimistic. "The future of movies on UMD is great," he states, asserting that demand for the format is growing. "We saw a 35 per cent growth year-on-year from 2005 to 2006, which clearly demonstrates a growing interest by consumers for UMD movies."

Sony Computer Entertainment unleashes downloadable movies and other content onto PSP, it won't mean the end of UMD. "We'll never walk away from our base," says Koller. "Whether it's movies or game content, third parties have an incredible opportunity to utilize it."

"The future of UMD is bright," Koller proclaims.

When electronic stores got rid of the dedicated space for UMD Movies, UMD became a failure. It wasn't a smart move to sell UMD movies which was obviously of lower quality and cost more.

Edit: When CS became possible on PSP, UMDs became obsolete to many.

So without distributing movies on UMD, UMD would have been a success, but not now?

I can see you are no businessman. The PSP is powerful and featurefull enough to include a movie codec, IMO it made sense for Sony to tap this potential. It probably helped lower UMD mass production costs and provided a few extra bucks for Sony and additional options to users.

UDM as a movie format has been more successful than I expected. Many years before the PSP launched I already watched movies in the train using my laptop, higher quality and much bigger screen, I think Sony knew such things as well.

UMD as a format is a faliure. PSP as a media player is not. It is the ultimate mutli-media, emulation handheld (PSP-2000). You can put any movies you want on a memory stick/microsd and watch it on your PSP. Why carry around a bunch of UMD movies when you can rip them from your own DVDs that you can buy for cheaper than UMD movies?

What does being a businessman have anything to do with it? Are you a Sony salesman or something? o_O

@pbroy

Just check the link for Mike's company Fun Computing (currently in his sig, and see where it goes).  Beyond that this post by Mike explains a business deal attempt between his firm and Sony:

Draw you own conclusions.  But know you are far from the first person to percieve this in him and question him on it.

As to the point of the thread itself, I think one must answer the question by looking at what Sony said they were hoping it would be before they ever released it.  At that time Sony said they wanted "to make UMD the de facto compact storage media for the next generation of SD-quality video".  I'd say they failed at that.
