No need to explain that. The new PSPgo (the name might be funny for brazilian people in here
) just droped the UMD drive. Will Sony give further support for the media disc?
Discuss and yeah, my first post =P

I don't think anyone realistically ever expected it to become a household name or something, but it has been about as successful as you could expect. It wasn't a failure, but I wouldn't call it a success either.
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke
It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...." Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
Welcome to vgchartz, keep_the_change!
When the company that makes a format abandons it, it mean it's pretty much a failure.
My themeforest portfolio:
I think sony will still support umd since the psp go isn't supposed to be a replacement for the psp-3000 as it'll still be on the market. I think the big reason why sony released a umd-less psp was just to offer a cheaper psp model and maybe stop pirating by forcing users to dl the games off psn.
@ animefobber
Yeah but Sony is already launching download only games. They're not supporting a UMD version of patapon 2 which is a PSP hit.
Err the UMD has been a failure for quite some time. Just because a little bit of people say otherwise doesnt make it so.
DD I guess was the only other way to go for PSP since carts might have been to expensive for those larger games I dunno.

I thought Sony was just testing the waters for digital downloads on the psp with Patapon 2 since a UMD version is available for regions outside the US.
It is just a custom disc drive like other consoles use and used custom formats. I think UMD support has been rather good (there are even many movies available!).
As standard DVDs are much too big for a handheld console, it was either something like UMD or cartridges. Cartridges provide less storage space and are relatively expensive for mass production.
Currently internal flash drives have come down in costs and online distribution of PSP content is a lot more viable. Sony will likely continue to provide the UMD option to current PSP owners for a long time to come. I am interested in PSP Go, smaller, no discs or cartridge to take with you, remote PS3 connectivity, maybe longer battery life, I think this makes sense.
Yes, Sony wanted UMD movies and more
Anyway, games will still be released on UMD, so they are not entirely abandoning it
Err the UMD was never really a failure in the first place, just because some people on the internet say it was.
The format survived for a good 4 years and yet this 'failure' still has a large shelf-space in the majority of UK retailers. The HMV in Hatfield has an entire row dedicated to the PSP and UMD. I'm sure that there are many other places like that, in which case the UMD is not a failure.
