I don't know if it was my imagination or not, but back in the N64/Playstation generation it seemed like most of the best games tended to have single player campaigns in the 25 - 40 hour range, in the last generationg (PS2/XBox/Gamecube) that seemed to drop to 15 to 30 hours, and now it seems to be in the 8 to 15 hour range.

How many people think games are getting shorter because they're getting too expensive to develop and how many people think they're getting shorter because developers are cutting out more 'crap'?

I think it has more to do with the fact that there's a multiplayer component built into most games as well now.

Personally, I don't want 30+ hour games. I want something that I have a chance of finishing relatively quickly.

I don't want every game to be longer than 30 hours, but from top-tier games like Halo I expect more than just fun for a couple of hours. At least I would be very disappointed if Mario Galaxy were shorter than 20 hours, and even that would be quite short for the game.

Do you seriously expect Mario Galaxy to take longer than 10 hours?

I mean how long did it take to finish Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario World?

I remember Super Mario Land 2 on Game Boy which took less than 5 hours if I remember correctly. And no, I don't think these games were too short.

Don't you think it would be better to compare Galaxy with Games like Sunshine or Mario 64 rather than with a GB game? I mean, you're argumentation already falls flat after that.

I guess we'll find out the length of SMG when it comes out. That is going from start to finish without having to collect all the stars or coins or whatever since most other games that get bashed for length such things are ignored.

But like IGN said, 9 levels, 1 is crap (2nd to last). Not totally impressive with the variations in general areas of play. Even Resistance with it's 10 - 12 hours at least gave you what... 20 levels with 3 stages each. The game deserves it's high praise but truly 9 stages really isn't that much variation, of course ill borrow my friend's 360, beat it on legendary, unlock legacy if the mode exists in Halo 3 like it did in Halo and Halo 2 and beat that.

IGN:

"Lasting Appeal
The main quest is lengthy, and after-hours with going for all the 120 Shines keeps on kicking. Very entertaining, but only the most hardcore of fans will play through it twice."

I can't find any more references to the length of Mario Sunshine but, if I remember correctly, most reviewers put its length in the 20 hour range to get the 60 stars needed to complete the main quest and (roughly) 40 hours to get 120 stars ...

Uh, every reviewer has said that each level is very, very different and unique. They also said that there is no corridior repeating and backtracking like previous halos.

And when has a level in one game been the same as a level in another? Levels are a stupid way to measure the length of a game.

The game is on the short side, but the fact that the needler isn't useless almost makes up for it.

OK, seems that my assumption was wrong. I've never played Sunshine and barely played Mario 64, that's why I didn't refer to these games. Anyway, a lot of games that I love can be finished in way less than 10 hours, therefore it's no big deal for me if a new game is "only" 10 hours long.

@madskillz, 30 second load time is tiresome, how can you call that fast?

@sieanr, i agree number of levels has nothing to do with the quality or diversity of a game.

oh and i recently [2 months ago] got my first mario game [besides 2 mariokarts] with SM64 and my first playthrough getting all 120 stars i think was about 20-30 hours [i'll have to add-up the hours on the Wii message board] as long as SMG is similar to that [at least 15h] i won't complain at the length.

LMAO 1080p on dvd?? hahahaha!!

On topic: If the game were to be 1080p and 60fps the length would drop from 9 hours to 6 hours, 1080p takes nearly double the space that 720p does. 9 hours isnt short in my opinion.

I only say that becuase I read/heard that they were trying to make H3 run at 1080p 60fps (sorry no source - not a big halo fan.  That is why they have hdmi on the new 360.  But like GT said in their review it wasn't the best gfx of thi gen :P

  Unleash The Beast!

End of 2011 Sales: Wii = 90mil, 360 = 61mil, PS3= 60mil

Is it only me or does this game not exactly "feel" next-gen?
