[edit] Development

Star Ocean: The Last Hope was originally announced at the "Star Ocean Special Stage" at the 2007 Square Enix Party as the tentatively titled Star Ocean 4 with no platform.[12] An Xbox 360 release was revealed during the 2008 Xbox 360 RPG Premiere. In a special interview with Xbox Japan, weeks before the game's release, game producer Yoshinori Yamagishi revealed that the team began planning out Star Ocean: The Last Hope immediately after they finished developing Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, so actual development time took about 5 years. The game uses an improved version of the game engine used in Infinite Undiscovery, where it is able to generate much better graphics, and the stunning expression of light in real time. He also mentioned that the biggest problem the team encountered while creating the game is capacity, as making a RPG on a latest generation console requires vast amounts of data and coding thanks to the complexity of graphics and animations. The game will also be running at a constant 60 fps. Pre-rendered movies are done by a collaboration between tri-Ace and Visual Works, while character design and illustration (only in the Japanese version) is handled by Katsumi Enami, best known for her illustration work in the light novel and anime series Baccano!.[13][14]

When asked whether the title would release on the PlayStation 3, Square Enix producer Yoshinori Yamagishi replied "We can say that it will be released first [on the Xbox 360]. Whether we'll release it on the PS3 is undecided. We may release it, we may not."[15] Square Enix and The Last Hope's development team have since stated that there are no plans for a PS3 version.[16][17] In an interview, Yamagishi cited that Xbox 360 was the first seventh generation console to come out, and its "extremely well-made hardware", from a developer's standpoint, as the reasons why he chose it to develop Star Ocean: The Last Hope on.

I would bet that MS has some sort of package deal with that engine. Either way, I figure it was a lot cheaper to use that engine, than to build one from scratch...otherwise, they probably would have just built it.

This is all just speculation.

LO was done using the Unreal 3 engine...What are you talking about?

I shall translate:

I bet MS has some sort of package deal with that engine. IE: They buy multiple licenses and pay less per use, than companies who buy the rights for just one game.

@Undying

OMFG, lol, you meant the battle system. LMFAO I got epic pwnd, and am exposed! D:

Errmmm..I fail to see what you mean...If you mean due to MS and Epic working together that they got the UR3 engine cheaper..Then I guess..But I don't think so....

Dude Zizzla....That Wiki doesn't anything..hes not gonna come out and " weree sorry guys but SE and MS moneyhatting, has forced us to make are PS franchise a 360 exclusive" I mean you really think they would grow the franchise on PS then make the last ond 360 exclusive just the hell of it??? and why he said its undecided is because SE hasnt allowed them to make a port( the publishers pic the consoles) Zizzla this common sence...tri-Ace has worked with Enix now SE for there whole life..now they dropped them..that doesn't happen because your happy

Makes me Happy!..

RoF baby!.

I could see SE forcing them to put it on 360...but I find the 5 years Dev time interesting....on PS3 it would of made more money...once the UK sales come in the game will have standard JRPG sales...if only I japan the Xbox 360 were not the least fave it could had more sales.....But I see you point he would not come out and say that SE and MS forced them....One of the first things I said when i heard of SO4 on Xbox 360 was.."Who are they planning to sell this game to?"......For Sega's sake I hope they can lock tri-Ace down..For Fanboyism's sake I hope MS buys them LOL j/k..well not really

@Undying

I am pretty sure that majority of your PS2 JRPG list is missing data. Many of the Tales games for example have Japan only data.

Best thing for you to do if you want to compare is to compare ToV sales to TotA sales or Star Ocean 3 sales to Star Ocean : TLH. Tales of the Abyss for example sold 2x Vesperia with only Japan data compared to Vesperia having Japan + Americas.

You can't really say "See, PS2 JRPG sold bad. Just look, with Japan only data it barely sold more than X game with Japan + Americas data".

Check the lists before posting them.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Hey Buddy!

Have you seen Resonance of Fate yet?

obviously..SE is paying for all tri-Aces games...there not gonn bite the hand that feeds them..but I gaurentee you, when tri-Ace and SEGA get cozy were gonna here about there final SE days..and no tri-Ace wont let MS buy them...they need a western breakthrough too..RoF is the first tri-Ace game meant for world wide appeal..this will boost them beyound anything they ever imagined
