Forums - Gaming - What do you like and is important about each genre?

What makes each of these genres listed great?  What do you like in them?  What's important?

If you can please, list things you like and don't like about each genre you care about, what's essential, what certain things bother you about them, and anything else you think is relevant for that genre.

  • Shooters -- This includes first person, third person, tactical, and anything else you might consider any kind of a shooter.

  • Action/Adventure -- Should be self explanatory here.  It's alright if genres bleed into each other

  • WRPG -- Western RPG's like Mass Effect, Fallout 3, ect.

  • JRPG -- You're Final Fantasies and whatnot

  • Racing -- Includes everything from Burnout to Mario Kart

  • Sports -- Everything from Madden to Punch-Out!!

  • Platformers -- Your Marios and Tomb Raiders

  • Casual -- This includes your mini games compilations like Boom Blox and typical party games like Rayman Raving Rabbids.  This can also include many Live and PSN games.  Just really quick games that you can play for 5 minutes or with a large group of people.

  • Fighting -- Super Smash Bros to Street Fighter

  • RTS -- might as well include this

I'm sure there are other genres and if you can think of them, list them and list what you like about them please!  Just be warned, I have no intentions of splitting some genres further down like RPGs and Shooters.

If you have a game you even really like, tell me what of the above genres it fits into and what makes you like it so much.

Thanks for the help!

Shooters

  • Like:  Customizable controls
  • Like:  Clever enemy AI for increased difficulties
  • Like:  Carrying many (more than 2) fun weapons
  • Like:  Regenerating health (favors the skilled)
  • Like:  Little or no plot and not ashamed of it.
  • Like:  Great plot
  • Like:  Unlockables for single player but not multiplayer.  I don't want to have to play the game to perfect to have a blast with friends.
  • Like:  Split-screen local multiplayer.
  • Like:  Split-screen and online co-op.
  • Dislike:  Forced plot that tries to be great and fails
  • Dislike:  Stupidly long boss battles that force you to do the same thing over and over.  After the first 3 times we get it.  Don't make us do the same thing 40 times to win the battle.
  • Dislike:  Secrets no one will realistically find during the course of playing the game.
  • Dislike:  Weapons no one will actually use because they suck.

Is this kind of what you're looking for Twesterm?  I'll do it for each genre if this is what you want.

Yup, that helps a lot!

I was starting to write reviews for all the games I've finished recently and I wanted to try out a new method I've been kicking around in my head but just needed a little help from people real quick to see if it will even work.

JRPG
Likes:

  • Battle system that incorporates enough strategy that most fights I actually have to think (very little spamming the attack button to win the fight)
  • Story is key, but it is difficult for me to quantify what makes a good one
  • If you're going to do a random encounter system have a visual cue as to how close a random encounter is to happening, and make sure they don't happen too often
  • Overwold map that I can explore (god I miss those)
  • I really enjoy a system that lets characters permanently die, but it can't be too easy for them to die or it gets annoying
  • Every character you use in a fight should have his own personality

Dislikes:

  • saying the name of the attack whenever they do it along with any game that has battle chatter too often
  • not having save points before bosses (yes I'm a pansy, screw you!)
  • annoying voice overs (basically almost everyone from Eternal Sonata and the pig from Valkyria)

Action

  • Like:  Lots of content (enemies, levels, etc)
  • Like:  Replayability in the form of more usable characters/classes and unique challenges for each.
  • Like:  Unlockable characters/classes.
  • Like:  Co-op mode (local and online).
  • Like:  Level/advancement systems.
  • Like:  Great enemy design (if we're killing tons of them make them awesome looking)
  • Like:  Quick level-ups or steady streams of rewards that tell me to keep playing.
  • Like:  Great backdrops and settings for the action.
  • Like:  Good hit indicators.  I loved Oni's various colors that would appear when you hit the enemies that showed their health level.
  • Dislike:  Slow leveling or power increase.
  • Dislike:  50 different level-up options or powers that don't actually help me kill more/faster (Titan's Quest).
  • Dislike:  Plots that carry me from one place to the other without really explaining why (God of War 2...).
  • Dislike:  Awesome cutscenes that feature my character doing crazy stuff it can't actually do in game (DMC).
  • Dislike:  Recolors of existing enemies instead of new enemies.
  • Dislike:  Events, levels, or fights with time limits.
  • Dislike:  Cool techniques that are almost never useful (Blood Rayne 2).
  • Dislike:  Gore for the sake of gore (Blood Rayne 2).
  • Dislike:  Tacked on minigames that take me out of the action.
