Forums - Website Topics - Can we ban confessed pirates and modders?

Used games and game rentals hurt developers and publishers much more than piracy. GameStop makes billions of dollars per year, which could have gone to developers and publishers. Pirates aren't making money at the expense of the game industry.

Yes it's stealing. But it's not actually making them lose money like GameStop is. If I could crush GameStop or stop all piracy, I'd crush GameStop.

And banning people for admitting breaking a law would be really weird. I stole a Virtual Boy from a friend of mine. Should I get banned?

Copyright Infrengment is not stealing

"interference with copyright does not easily equate with theft, conversion, or fraud. The Copyright Act even employs a separate term of art to define one who misappropriates a copyright: ... 'an infringer of the copyright.' ...

The infringer invades a statutorily defined province guaranteed to the copyright holder alone. But he does not assume physical control over the copyright; nor does he wholly deprive its owner of its use. While one may colloquially link infringement with some general notion of wrongful appropriation, infringement plainly implicates a more complex set of property interests than does run-of-the-mill theft, conversion, or fraud."

—Dowling v. United States, 473 U.S. 207, pp. 217–218

As long as it's not a bannable offense for being too sexy.

I don't pirate games but I do download movies and music will I be ban?

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I don't see why VGchartz should ban someone for doing something outside the site.

For example, If I stole a candy bar or committed grand theft auto would I be banned?

As long as people follow forum rules, I don't think it should matter.

Yes. But not because you stole anything.

Well why then?

Because you have me thinking about candy bars now and realize that I haven't eaten anything today. Therefore you deserve a ban. -_-

well go steal one...it's not like you'd be banned ;)

Well since it has been brought up...
I've pirated literally thousands of dollars worth of PC games. I play NES, SNES, GBA, N64 and PS2 games... on my PC. None of this is *illegal*, seeing as i don't distribute the games. I can only think of one case (Oblivion) where I would have bought the game instead. I buy tons of games, and pirates others that I don't think are worth buying. I don't brag about it, and have never mentioned it before now. Add me to ban list if this is bannable offence.

If you don't distribute on a wide scale or in a way that effects the market it's not even piracy.
