Forums - Sony - May 15, 2009: PS3 still $40 above cost.( $440 to make)

Im pretty sure the slimmer PS3 should allow $ony to cut the price. They will probably still loose alittle money on each console sold but not what every ones thinking $140.

Damn. Like something went wrong with sony this gen. Isnt one of the points of developing a console "in house" to keep the cost down?

Like sony is not paying any royalties on the cell and bluray and still cost is so high...

The Slim PS3 will no doubt bring the cost of the system down, but not to the extent where Sony can cut the price by another $100 guys.

Think $50. And be happy with that. It's better than nothing.

I honestly do not understand this dementia that afflicts some members. I think it is beyond time for some of you to have gotten reasonable. Sony is losing money as a company, and cutting prices only hurts the bottom line. Not to mention it is no longer necessarily true that it would have any effect on their market position. Not when both Microsoft and Nintendo can easily afford to match the price cuts.

Beyond that this is only the losses on hardware. This makes no mention of failed software, or of the ongoing cost of maintaining a free online service. With piss poor currency exchange rates you will be lucky if each unit isn't losing them eighty dollars per console sale. Hell further more I doubt Sony could actually be counted on to meet demand on a dramatic increase in sales.

That was the real screw up for Sony in the first year. They produced too many consoles, and had to slash prices in short order to regain equilibrium. That has to be something Sony should be wary about. Right now they cannot afford to have a few million unsold consoles in the warehouse. That is over a billion dollars they cannot spend sitting on a shelf, and they have to account for that.

All this talk of price cutting, and radical console redesigns sounds like pie in the sky. I would expect a slim 360 before a slim PS3. I cannot see the Wii getting any slimmer. Though Microsoft should be farther along the miniaturization path then Sony at this point.

Though it is I have to say nice to have a number to refute the claims of production parity. Too many community members confused the early price cuts with production savings. When all they were about was saving the console from a very imminent death.
