Champions Online delayed to Sept. 1 for added content, polish

Originally slated to don its cape and take to the skies on July 14, Cryptic Studios' next superhero MMO, Champions Online, is staying put until September 1. The City of Heroes creator today announced a delay for the Atari-published title, with the studio's design director and Champions executive producer Bill Roper commenting, "Through our constant dialogue with our vocal and supportive community of beta testers, we quickly realized that in order to implement certain features that we all considered important the development of Champions Online would require more time."

But what features? We asked Roper, who revealed that, in addition to more instanced and scripted missions, the extra development time is being used to provide a larger variety of core powers, travel powers and upgrades. It's also allowing Cryptic that special something every developer wishes they had more of: time to polish. "We want the launch to be as smooth as possible, with the game as polished as it can be. We're glad to have the extra time to do so," he said, no doubt holding a soft cloth and a DVD to illustrate the polishing process.

Good to hear, MMORPGs are very delicate and should be worked on very tediously untill every last problem is ironed out. I can wait for this title, I know it will be amazing.

Why must JRPG female leads suck so bad?

Yes... but like some betas people just want to play first and not submit bugs, which makes the game suck upon release..

Glad to hear it's not financial reasons..

very good news, this game needs it, desperately!

I hope the game is a more faster paced that CoH. While I liked CoH the super powers at times seemed slowish. Often general street gang fights took too long for Super Heroes. Also I hope there is lots of more manouvering this time than CoH. SH are more than standing their and taking HP damage. At least CoH did have knock back unlike a large number of MMOs.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Right now, the game plays almost exactly like CoH.  They just put a new name on it.

@gergroy, not necessarily a bad thing the game plays exactly like CoH. CoH was a fine MMORPG, it needed more polish on it overall, plus the developers made several mistakes on the game like enhancement diversification. Champions Online allows the developers to sort of hit a reset button on the whole thing and still draw in a big crowd.
