Forums - Sales - Gamasutra - Features - NPD: Behind the Numbers, April 2009

The 5 page article is available here

Hardware information that interests me:

1. Compared to the previous month (March 2009) sales of the Nintendo DS Lite were down 57%, but at 215,000 units one could consider it the third best-selling system of the month, behind the DSi and Nintendo Wii. - I wonder how long Nintendo will keep both models on the market for NA.

2. The last hit system, the PlayStation 2, never had April sales as strong as Wii sales were in April 2009.- didn't know that. I do agree that the sale number might be disappointing for some in the sense that the system isn't as wildly successful as it has been.

3. According to the NPD Group, the average price of Xbox 360 hardware (including all three models) is now $270... This appears to be a drop of around $3-5 dollars from Fall 2008. - Didn't know this before. This is good information to know.

4. The analysis of the 360 1600 point card sale is interesting.

5. To understand just how attractive the $400 model is relative to the $500 model, the average sale price for the PlayStation 3 hardware (supplied to us by the NPD Group) suggests that the cheaper model is outselling the more expensive one by a ratio of about 9-to-1.- Didn't know this before. This is good information to know.

6. No one appears to be making much money on the PSP as it is, and removing retailers from the chain of software sales might make the system more attractive to publishers.- This is an interesting reason for PSP to go digital distribution only.

Software information that interests me:

1. Chinatown Wars Breaks 160K - very solid second month. While it's too early to talk about legs, it does show the purchasing habit of DS owners.

2. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was heavily discounted at several retailers during April 2009. The Xbox 360 version made it to #9 on the overall chart and each version for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii made it onto those platforms respective top 10 lists. - That explains why Guitar Hero: Aerosmith sold better than Guitar Hero: Metallica in April although Guitar Hero: Metallica was just released in the end of March. I was very puzzled when I saw NPD data last week and thought it was a typo.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Around the Network

interesting info, seems that arcade is still making up about half the sales if you consider some elite sales in there. Doesn't surprise me about the ps3.
