Cool... but we already knew the PS3 has a ton of power.

I'd rather see that power in-game, not in some dumb test I don't care about.

Nothing new here.

some test you don't care about??? you need a good dose of bone marrow cancer, that one's hard to treat and spreads quickly... then, maybe you'd care... idiot... @ragnarok, it's a joint program ran on millions of pcs and PS3s that basically calculates different protein structures to see if they're usuable for treating different diseases and conditions. the idea is similar to SETI, if that helps.

Alko and those who are so negative in here. Sure you make and poke fun at Folding@home, but what if you are wrong? What if they are able to come up with some cures to diseases that could affect you or those you love in the future and this work turns out great results?

Some people donate money to charities and PS3 owners can donate their system's power to help the world be a better place hopefully with this research.

This isn't about OMGTEHPS3! It's about research to help mankind.

I won't feel a bit sorry for Alko or those negative Nancy's that are poking fun at this if some horrible disease gets them, and the year after they die, a cure is found from this hard work.

Get your Portable ID!

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

Eh, it's not about the PS3's power. Don't get how people arn't getting this.

It's about the fact that a crapload of PS3's combined can help a supercomputer. The same could be said for a crapload of 360s or Wiis if they were designed that way. Which they wern't... but it seems pretty obvious they should have been.

Well unless it falls into rogue nations hands anyway. The governement was afraid PS2's were going to fall into Iraqs hands and they were going to use them by combining them... much like folding@home into a computer to be used for missle technology or some such.

Wonder how much more possible it is for the PS3 to be used for that since it's actually designed for it and just needs some software to do so.

I think most people are cynical because F@H is an obvious PR move by Sony.

Both..

You're right.

Sony must be really altruistic.

Anything implying that they're a business is just MS FUD.

lol, this is a positive story I don't see why people are taking such issue with this...

Just to put it in perspective one of the most powerful supercomputers on the earth (that is public knowledge anyways) is Blue Gene/L and it does 280 Teraflops with 360 Teraflops as a theorotical max.

Earlier this year they also unveiled a newer version Blue Gene/P which supposedly runs at 1 petaflop and can be configured to run at 3 petaflops.

The reason I am quoting these specs is because these computers have enormous price tags to rent time on them to run simulations and the like. So for PS3s to be put to good use in assisting research and carrying that kind of workload is very cool.
