my compy is a home built:

XP Pro 32bit
Intel core 2 duo E8400 3.0GHz 45nm
8600GT 512MB
4GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066
400GB SATA HDD
500w PSU

I will get Win7 later this year, probably 64bit.

Not the best, but pretty good I think.

slap a new gpu in there and it will be up there

Considering this, what do you think?

go for something better like a 9800gt or gtx

These are my only 9 series choices, at least from new egg, with a PCIExpress x16. All others seem to be the newer PCIExpress 2.0 version which I don't think my mobo can do. I'll have to double check that.

Yeah, my mobo can not do the 2.0 version.

pci express 16 2.0 works with the old boards.

I put a geforce 9800 in my moms that works just fine.

1TB main drives are becoming standard for workstations, regardless of whether most people need that much space. They cost less than $100, which is poco for any system that cost at least $1k.

500GB drives are fine for daily use, but personally, I find them a little pinched as main drives if you have a lot of games on Steam installed and especially if you actually do disk intensive work on your system (high res photo, video editing, 3D work).

Of course dedicated gaming rigs use either smaller 10k drives or SSD drives for game specific use.

The only thing I currently use a 1TB drive for is archives and back ups.

a bit over 9k on 3dmark06
