my only question is how they will be able to make a ps4 and compete against nintendo and microsoft. they dont have the cash to do so

Sony made $1,674,413,200 profit on PlayStation, Microsoft lost $9,113,000,000 on Xbox. You should be more worried about Microsoft than Sony.

have you read the post? or seen recent numbers? the *ONLY* profit sony has left is what it made with the ORIGINAL playstation..and that was so many years ago. who know where those funds are now? it has lost everything it has made from the ps2 and psp and some of the psONE profits. so yes, that is scary. on the other hand, microsoft has made money with the xbox 360 and nintendo has made so much more money with the wii. since the xbox360 and the wii were successful and sony has effectively been in the red for the psp, ps2 and ps3 how is it not worrying that the ps4 will not be a worthwhile investment for shareholders??

That's a terrible argument. You're saying that stockholders should worry about the future prospects because the PS3 lost what the PS2 made? The 360 will make up the money the Xbox lost.

To do that, 360 must make over 6  billion profit and 360 already lost more than 1 billion.

SONY took a big gamble with Blu-ray. Now that they have cemented BD's into history, it will slowly pay off for them. Not only does SONY make royalties from each BD, they also sell a tone of BD HW and the BD tech to other companies, etc, etc. They knew it was a huge risk in pushing it, but they also new the huge pot of gold at the other end that is waiting in the years to come.

U have to look very far ahead in these businesses. So, will SONY make a profit in the PS3's cycle; I think so, but it won't be as big as the PS2's. Now, come PS4 it will be a very different story.

The division isn't profitable... companies don't work on past numbers, they work with what's happening now, and what will happen in the future.

The Xbox "brand" has pushed past it's losses, they are in the past.... the Playstation brand suffered a huge fuck-up with the PS3, to the point that if they had jumped out of te gaming business in 1999 they would have made more money than they have as of now. And the only reason it is still going is that the losses for the PS3 are decreasing enough that the PS2 and PSP will be able to prop up the division perhaps next fiscal year (ending 2011... although PS2 will probably be about dead by then so it will be the PSP propping up the PS3)

DId you check out the link i posted on last page? When you count overall earnings Sony has made 1.60 billion profit on PlayStation, so they have cash to enter at least 1 generation. that was my answer to jellyfishprince.

I don't need to. I have that thread bookmarked.

I realise that Sony's Game division as a whole is still in the black.... that's why I said that about if they had pulled out of gaming in 1999 (they would be more than 1.6 billion in the black if they had)

What I was reponding to is your assumption that Sony will be using the fact that they profited years ago to prove the division is still ok.... it isn't, they are looking at now, and how much they are loosing, and forcasting how much they will lose with it. They can see the division at least will stop bleeding money in the future, which is why the PS3 hasn't been discontinued.

Yes the Xbox division has lost a crap load more money (Xbox orignal probably lost more like $5 billion, not 6.... because you have to take note of what was already being spent on the X360 development before it released, as well as money the Zune probably lost in the time before 2005) but they are alread regaining profits.... and no they don't have a hope in hell for the X360 to bring back all the money they lost from Xbox.... It will struggle to bring back even half of what it itself has lost them (about $4 billion so far, but that is decreasing)

So you dont think PlayStation will start making profit again like 360 did last year?

how was sony this stupid? I was reviewing the sales of the ps3 vs the ps2 at launch and actually, the sales trends patterns of the ps3 is relatively on par with the ps2.

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=PS3&reg1=All&cons2=PS2&reg2=All&cons3=&reg3=All&weeks=156

surely the sales have not gone to plan as we have seen that in the past 3 years since the ps3 launch, all profit from the ps2, psp and most of the psx have been eaten away. this is sony's own fault.

sony somehow expected a $599 console to sell BETTER than their best selling $299 console? I dont get it? how could they come to that conclusion? I understand that the man behind it was fired but.. why did not one point this out?

prediction: wii to sell 150million console by end of 2010

@jellyfishprince: That graph is the source of many common misconceptions. The PS2 had a staggered launch, being launched in Japan much earlier than America/Europe.

If you check the same graph for each region, the picture looks very different:

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=PS3&reg1=Japan&cons2=PS2&reg2=Japan&cons3=X360&reg3=Japan&weeks=156

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=PS3&reg1=America&cons2=PS2&reg2=America&cons3=X360&reg3=America&weeks=156

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=PS3&reg1=Europe&cons2=PS2&reg2=Europe&cons3=X360&reg3=Europe&weeks=156

The PS3 is not selling on par with the PS2 in any significant way.

PS: I would have used Total Other instead of Europe but that graph doesn't work well.

Read the blue.
I do believe the division will start being profitable again, The PS3 should even manage to start making money in the future, but after weekly break even point (which could be a further $1 billion down the line) they will be lucky to make even $1 billion.

$6.5 billion in the red now, if it stops losing money after $7.5 billion then even in the lucky scenario where it manages to profit $1 billion thereafter, it would still have lost what it has now.... and is indeed by long and far the biggest console loss Sony has made (considering PS1/2 and P have all made profit over their lives this is obvious) which is what this thread was about.

It's possible they won't release a PS4, but I doubt they'll stop PS3, it's about to become profitable. What's the point of stopping it?
