have you read the post? or seen recent numbers? the *ONLY* profit sony has left is what it made with the ORIGINAL playstation..and that was so many years ago. who know where those funds are now? it has lost everything it has made from the ps2 and psp and some of the psONE profits. so yes, that is scary. on the other hand, microsoft has made money with the xbox 360 and nintendo has made so much more money with the wii. since the xbox360 and the wii were successful and sony has effectively been in the red for the psp, ps2 and ps3 how is it not worrying that the ps4 will not be a worthwhile investment for shareholders??

prediction: wii to sell 150million console by end of 2010

That's nice but last time I checked thread title it was about PS3 and PS2 not Playstation brand as a whole. I don't recall it involving any xbox reports as well, if you want a different topic make a new thread =P.
^^lol I can see the thread title now:
"Will the X360 ever be able to recoup the losses of the XBox? ANSWER HINT: NO WAY JOSE"

Proud Sony Rear Admiral
I hope this same thing happens to MS. If your asking for an initial loss and a long term gain eventually it will catch up to you.
“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Well, honestily i dont think Sony really gives a fuck which consle made the most profit for them as long as their division is profitable. And profit MS made in 2008 with 360 wasnt even 20% of the loss they made during 2 last years with 360 so 360 is also not profitable. If you lose 9 billion in 9 years and you made 260 million profit you are NOT profitable.
Anyway this isnt about Xbox. I just wanted to point out that PlayStation is STILL profitable but if they continiue to lose money they wont be profitable anymore. That's all i wanted to say
From what I can see, PS3 will break even this year and start turning profits next year. This menas that Sony will support it for a few years, why shouldn't they if it starts giving them profits? That's all that matters to me. Whether they will make a PS4 or not, who cares, as long as the PS3 is given great games and services like it is now, I'm perfectly satisfied.
On a side note, I don't think I can believe that MS has made a profit over the 360...with all the RROD and the price drops, they are just going for marketshare over profitability. They are so rich that a couple billions losses don't really matter to them.

The division isn't profitable... companies don't work on past numbers, they work with what's happening now, and what will happen in the future.
The Xbox "brand" has pushed past it's losses, they are in the past.... the Playstation brand suffered a huge fuck-up with the PS3, to the point that if they had jumped out of te gaming business in 1999 they would have made more money than they have as of now. And the only reason it is still going is that the losses for the PS3 are decreasing enough that the PS2 and PSP will be able to prop up the division perhaps next fiscal year (ending 2011... although PS2 will probably be about dead by then so it will be the PSP propping up the PS3)
@dli2k3. By the end of this fiscal year yes, the PS3 could start turning a small profit.... but for the FY as a whole the PS3 section will still be in the red, that is pretty much certain given that it must have lost Sony over $1 billion this year (division lost 600mil, but PSP+PS2 will have made more than 400mil together)
So in 2 years time when we are reading the reports for FY ending March 2011 the PS3 might have finally had a profitable year.

To be fair you really have to take a look at how much ps2 increased dvd sales and sony pictures.
Then you also have to look at the BR market and see how much sony has made with sony pictures and BR media.
ps2 and ps3 are not solely gaming machines.
and of course how much have they increased brandname.
There are many factors that have value, not just dollar signs.
(to illustrate: MS has lost a lot of money. Let's face it, much more than sony has lost on the ps3. However, in the last two generations they have literally upseated sony and have cut out a space in the livingroom for themselves. From this new base of operations, they tie together streaming movies, music and other things directly from wireless access. Making a direct connection to the PC room. Also it increases brand recognition and loyalty through use and age range. If xbox can get 1 out of 10 people who were going to buy a mac to buy a pc, then they've just recouperated all that loss.)
However, if you want to look at monetary figures, remember that their investor relations page shows currency rates affecting nearly 40% of the losses.

DId you check out the link i posted on last page? When you count overall earnings Sony has made 1.60 billion profit on PlayStation, so they have cash to enter at least 1 generation. that was my answer to jellyfishprince.
