If you are going to look at it like that, each as seperate consoles, then the PS3 had spent all the PS2 earnings before it released.

By the end of it's first couple of months, the development of the PS3 had already run up costs more than the profit the PS2 has made up to now. (~$3 billion).. but the PS2 profit at the time the PS3 released was less than it is now of course.

I suspect by the end of this FY, because of the slowing PS2 profits, the PS3 will have lost all the money made by PS1 + PS2, but the division as a whole from 1996 to 2010 will be [figuratively] hanging on the PSP.

 

I think it all just depends on Sony's actions over the next year for us to really know what's going to happen with their finances. It's obvious but that's the only way I can look at it.

 

Well we might have difficulty seperating things next year, as SCE has been combined in with the divisions in charge of vaio and mobile phones? (I think it was those two)

I think it was vaio and walkman. I am not sure about erikson but it could have been. It makes sense to me though. all the multimedia outlets are now just 1 department. I hope they can pull it off though because I don't want to see any of the companies going under.

 

Ah, yes... Walkman.

I am not sure what is happening with the phones, I thought they were dropping the partneship with Erikson.

Consoles owned: Game Cube, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP, PS1, PS2, PS3.

My prediction: NATAL WILL NOT help 360 sales. Maybe a 50-100k boost week 1, then a 30-70 k boost week 2, and back to the norm again after 3-5 weeks.

I didnt know PS3 damaged PlayStation division this bad. But PS3 losses are getting smaller so Sony might/will start making profit in 2009/2010

Sony doesn't seem to think they'll make a profit off the playstation division this year.  If they make 20$ profit off the PS2 and they plan to sell 2 million less this year, they'll need to make up 40 million in profit somewhere else in the division.  Nothing in their financials suggest that they'll be able to do that.

 



Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

Sony says their report they don't expect profitability this year from the games division (that is, Apr 2009 - Mar 2010).

my only question is how they will be able to make a ps4 and compete against nintendo and microsoft. they dont have the cash to do so

Sony made $1,674,413,200 profit on PlayStation, Microsoft lost $9,113,000,000 on Xbox. You should be more worried about Microsoft than Sony.
