I prefer to use data that shows games that are actually being played by gamers instead of sales. Interpret the data for yourself.

and where is the data for PS3? How can we compare if you only offer data for one side?

Ah, this thread is about laying to rest that the 360 = shooterbox console, this is not a comparison between the PS3 and 360. Just because I showed data thats different then the result you wanted doesn't mean its wrong.

thats bogus... shooters are played online more for both PS3 and 360... because that is the nature of online play... its the FPS domain on the HD consoles.

Online play? UFC Undisputed demo has no online play at all. But its on the list. Did they go by downloads then?

Yeah, you failed to put the 360=shooterbox phrase to rest, based on the replies on this thread. It's okay, the 360 owners (like myself) agree with this.

@monatan..

Cherrypicked? I used one variable for god sake!!! - It had to be an exclusive game.

I wasnt cherry picking... as in it has to be exclusive, and released within the last 24 months and it had to be a full price game and it had to have been on sale for over 6 months etc etc. Thats cherry picking.

In what way painful? All you do these days Monatana is appear in threads and criticise. Thats painful to read.

Yeah, but then you just randomly made up genres like it was nobody's business. Did you really put Ratchet as a shooter, or was someone joking when they said that? And like I said before, most of the games you listed weren't actually exclusive to the 360 (many of them have PC versions, Viva Pinata for starters).

And if all I did was criticize threads, than that would be all of my posts. More likely, I don't like people who make threads to prove a point and used a biased way to prove it. Are you saying that PS3 owners don't buy multiplatform games? What's your rationale for making this an exclusives list? Really?

Yes I did put ratchett as a shooter and I put Killzone 2 as a platform.... can your brain work out what may have happened there???  jesus christ.

Secondly adding in multiplatforms wont make jack difference as they sell pretty much pro rata for the 2 consoles concerned...

Plus if the "world" knew the 360 was the shooterbox then developers wouldnt make exclusives that werent shooters.. after all who the hell is going to buy them?

I have no idea what you are inferring by me selecting exclusives... perhaps you can enlighten me?  But I doubt it.

The generalisation is dumb and wrong...

Well if that was a typo, maybe you should be more careful when making threads. And I emphasize that you should at least learn how to spell my name correctly. Jesus tap dancing Christ! It's not "Monatan" or "Monatana", it's Montana! You're making me sound like a Pokemon. But I think you'd be better off just trying to spell other words because I don't even know what you're saying in your second line.

I don't really care whose right and whose wrong. I actually agree with you in that neither the PS3 or the 360 are shooter boxes, and that most of the stereotypes are pretty dumb. But by acknowledging the people who say this, and making a thread whining about it, you're just stooping to their level. You're no better than them. And if you want me to enlighten you, I can (I think you need it). Picking a list of exclusives isn't a good idea because most of the exclusives are first or second party, and these companies make games to push hardware rather than sell well and make money (at least, most of the time). And as I showed before, the sales levels of some exclusives aren't representative of the userbase. Since you obviously need things repeated for you twice, I'll say it again. Too Human sold poorly and was considered a flop by many people, but that's in the 360's top 20 selling exclusives. Make any sense? No. The game didn't fit the interests of the 360 userbase, but it's still included in the list with games like Halo 3 and Gears. Hrmm...

The generalisation is dumb and wrong...

The generalisation of saying that the 360 is only a "shooterbox" is dumb and wrong as most generalisations are.

Had you gone the way of saying: "I don't care about the sales, what matters to me is that a 360 owner has a wide variety of genres to choose from, and for each genre there are excellent games" then anybody would have had to agree with your argument.

But you instead went the way of numbers and sales and statistics to demonstrate that an average 360 gamer is not skewed towards shooters more than a different console owner, and there you point was not made, actually it failed in multiple ways.

1) Because counting games from a top 10 is empty of any real significance.

2) Because you chose to only count exclusives.

The numbers I pulled from this very site demonstrate a simple thing: if a random, average gamer goes into a shop and comes out with a big game (top 25) for the 360 then in 48% of the cases it's a shooter. If it's for the PS3 then it's a shooter in only 24% of the cases.

Doesn't this answer your original post about the inclinations towards genres of the 360 gamer? After all your OP started with:

"360 gamer = shooter whore.

The slightly aloof arguement goes like this.  Sony has a more diverse demographic (pompous much?) and the 360 owners just buy shooters.  However the following evidence of top selling exclusives would seem to disagree... actually it blows that myth totally out of the water!"

Please comment on these numbers, you've done enough patting on the back of those who agreed with you :)

MGS4 is NOT just a shooter.

You can go through almost the entire game without firing a bullet.

As someone suggested, I tried using the VGChartz categorization.

If you take the top 25 sellers on each platform including multiplatform titles, then calculate the percentage of sales of each category versus total sales of top 25 you get:

              PS3     360 FPS                 23.92% 36.58%
Shooter 0.00% 11.68%

Action 23.68% 7.64%
Racer               15.83% 4.33%
Adventure 9.57% 8.46% Platformer          6.18% 3.12%
Sports               15.28% 5.11%
RPG                   2.35% 13.29%
Other       3.17% 9.78%

Edit: updated to latest sales data
