I consider next gen gaming not when a system gets an update, but when that system's company releases the successor to that system. aka PS3 to PS4, XBOX 360 to XBOX 720, Wii to next nintendo system.

I won't mention handhelds, because they run on their own generation and are way behind in graphics and hardware anyway.

nintendo will not release while the wii is still selling so well, the only thing that will get them to release new console is the release of other console so it won't be left behind.

It is almost curtain be microsoft with sony and nintendo coming out within 12 moths or less if sony goes first nintendo will release a.s.a.p but they will not rush it.

The next gen is the next console made by console makers they are the ones who decide what the next gen is not the fans or anyone else to many people have been trying to downgrade their comps consoles by saying these kind of things.[it is possible for a next gen to be a step backwards even though not likely.]

I still think MS, but I'm iffy now after the success of the $200 price tag. That could delay it a little longer than I thought. So if not them, then definitely Nintendo. Sony is going to be reactionary, not a leader, in the release of their next console so I doubt they'll release first. Unless, things really go sour from here on out which I don't see happening.

This is defendant totally upon definition. I think Nintendo will be the next to release a new console, but I expect it to be an upgrade system a-la GBC or DSi. If that doesn't count in your book, then you can expect it to be MS who fires the next volley.

Well it would depend on how big the upgrade is.  If it's a completely rebuilt hardware with a new interactive setup and what not then it would definitely be a new entry.  But if it is something like, WiiHD or whatever for the others, then I'd say it a continuation.  But I essentially agree it's between MS and Nintendo right now.  Sony, probably wants this generation to continue going on for as long as possible.  They need a chance to recover losses and the release of a new console soon would not alleviate that.  They are better in a long run game with the PS3.  So they'll be completely reactionary to what Ninty or MS does unless things go really really BAD with the PS3 really really soon.  Hopefully that doesn't happen though so it won't be a scenario.
