There's speculation that they are going to be buying stocks, since they are really low right now.

They were offering half cash half MS stock for Yahoo. When a deal is done that way the premium increases as the risk of selling is higher. Yahoo was worth less than half as much as that.

They are gaining ground without doing it right now.

They can play with the market, letting things go and watch, and then... bang!

Because they have already tried to buy Nintendo the normal way, and it didn't work.

To try a hostile takeover could well mean that many of Nintendo's best employees would leave the company to form their own game studios or a new company similar to Nintendo. Hostile takeovers of tech companies are a hard thing to do... what you get is a bunch of software, IP, desks, chairs and computers. The real richness of Nintendo is in the employees who are not as easy to buy.

They don't need to? Okay, why didn't they do it when they could have though? Why not buy Sony or Nintendo last generation? Truth is that it's not that easy (as NJ5 explained).

Microsots real war is with Apple and Google, not Sony and Nintendo. Apple and Google are a threat to Microsofts very core products. The PS3 Xbox 360 war is like just a side project at best for them.

I'm a huge mac buff, but I gotta tell ya... Apple is no rival for Microsoft. 

They'll be pissing at each other forever since Apple is the proverbial bottle in a sea of windows but Cupertino will always refuse to serve a large chunk of customers.
