@Squilliam, after some time, GC was selling for 99$, BUT this price didn`t help.
x360 is already a CHEAP console.
The pricecut, wont help much, since it`s already at MASS market price.

While, PS3 is yet to enter to that 299$ mass market price.
Also, PS3 game base is growing fatser, than x360. that`s why PS3 will be a MUST HAVE console. It will have too MANY GREAT AAA games, to be ignored.

You're making some serious assumptions here. Theres no assurance than the PS3 will reach the $299 price point this year. Its what you would like to happen, but its not assured that it will happen. Also even if the PS3 reaches $299 theres always the extremely likely possibility that the Xbox 360 will reach the $149 and $199 price points at the same time. A $299 PS3 is relatively more expensive than a $199 Premium than it is now at the current prices.

Aren't you doing the same thing? LOL!

The PS3 wont outsell the 360 in America after the pricecut... maybe for a little while... but it isnt the product if choice in america.

Count out a $299 PS3 at your own peril. You can quote me on this: The only way the 360 will outsell the PS3 after a price cut is with a huge game launch or an equivalent price cut (the 60GB going down to $200).

Given that the Xbox 360 is profitable if you consider this analysis. Its a given that Microsoft could do an identical price cut if they chose and cut $100 off the premium SKU. Also its not a given if Sony would and could do the same, they only recently posted a profit off the entire SCE division and thats with profit from at least the PS2 propping up the numbers.

I don't think that MS can manufacture and ship the 60GB 360 at $199 at a profit. If they willing to go back to losing money with every box sold then there is hope it will  be able to track the PS3's sales.

I am pretty sure Sony will drop the price in time for the holiday season. They should be able to earn those losses back from the future sales and increase in the image of the console.

PSN ID: T_Gears

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

Microsoft stated that they wanted to secure their second place position. I have seen no such specific statements from Sony to contradict such a statement. Also when they are making money its easier to believe that they can afford a price cut, especially compared to a company which hasn't made any money so far this generation.

@taxman.... but there will be a 360 price cut.... clearly.

I think there will be a cut as well. But i doubt it will have the same impact as the last one.

I dunno where but they stated that the Xbox 360 Arcade SKU broke even with accessories. This was last year, so with a smaller process on the chips and some other refinements you're saying that they couldn't sell the Premium at the same price with just a HDD and cable being the only difference between SKUs?

They probably could, but don't forget that the HDD is a fixed cost that is out of their hands and they probably get it as cheaply as they can.

If they do that they would be cutting it pretty close with the Arcade and they wouldn't be able to cut it any further afterwards.

The cheapest HDD price on NewEgg is $35 for a 2.5" HDD or $45 for a HDD which isn't on a special price. Both are 80GB. As it costs no more than $50 to have a HDD, they could likely keep the price within $50 of the Arcade SKU if they so chose. Beyond that they could switch to flash based memory which would scale down in cost extremely well provided they do not increase the HDD space beyond 60GB.

But you still made an assumptions. We'll have to wait and see, right?

We never know maybe by that time, PS3 overtook 360 already and gain profit at the same time or the 360 increased the gap by 15-18 million.

EDIT: I am talking about the worlwide sales not American sales.

@Squilliam, PS3 will reach 299$ price eventually.
Atleast till the middle 2010, definitely.

PS3 is getting 45nm Cell and RSX this summer. This will help to cut cost.
Also, recent PS2 price drop, and possible PSP price drop => Sony is in position to cut price.

For those people. who will want to PLAY
Killzone 2
Gran Turismo 5
Uncharted 2

The difference between 199$ and 299$ won`t matter much, since BOTH console will be in MASS MARKET price.
Also don`t forget FREE online.
Of`course 199$ price will have inpact on x360 sales,
BUT entering mass market price for PS3 will make BIGGER effect.
Don`t forget, that PS3 will still have MORE value at it`s price.
Actually best value for any 299$ costing console to date.

@kowenicki, it`s identical for MULTIPLATFORM titles,
BUT for exclusives, PS3 has MUCH more to offer.

Also, GC wasn`t very different from PS2/GC. It just had less support and less great games.
PS3 has enough games for ANY genre.

@Stefan.De.Machtige, PS3 has a STRONG PlayStation BRAND behind.
It still has a support in Japan.
In Japan, PS3 is the only 1 HD console of choice. PS3 i salready going otusell LTD GC sales in Japan by the end of this year.
MGS4 KZ2 LBP VC DS GoW3 HR U2 FFXIIIv and many, many others.

PS3 is a MUST HAVE console this gen.

Are you effing insane? Because the sales numbers seem to disagree with you.

U are speculating, again. Lets look at 3 facts;

1. The PS3 when it had it's only price cut 1.5 years ago had good increases in HW and continually out sold the 360 till mid/late last year. Small price cut, too.

2. The 360 is a lot cheaper than the PS3 now, so it should be selling a lot more than the PS3, yes? Well it is not.

3. All SONY consoles have continued to sell, and well, well after the next gen platform is released. SONY also is very good at supporting and continuing SW well into later years, too. Now M$ has yet to relesae even one console that is supported with their next gen.

All these FACTS tell me that the PS3 will be pushed well into the PS4's life cycle weather the PS4 is released early or not. And that a $100 price cut will do wonders to HW sales when it comes.

Another fact; the SW line up is extreamly strong well into the future for the PS3 and it seems to be getting back to normal here in Japan, too with bigger support comming every day.
