Forums - Sony - The PS3 won't make it past 2012 in America at retail.

Again, this is America only he is talking about.  The one place that the PS3 will never, EVER, catch up in sales.

Catch up who wii or 360 ? exactly what games are gonna keep the 360 ahead of the PS3 ?  Can they counter a PS3 price cut to maintain a sales advantage ?

Microsoft is doing another price cut this year whether Sony does one or not. It's confirmed. As for the games the 360 is coming out with, wait for E3 as I am sure we will all be surprised.

With either.

In America, nothing has really spurred the PS3 to get close to the 360.  Even the big price cuts for the PS3 didn't cut the gap for the US.  Future price cuts will be offset by 360 price cuts.  Games on PS3 have not been very succesful in America compared to other regions.  When America alone has a higher gap than the world wide gap, it's pretty obvious the PS3 will never catch up in this region.

America already has their HD console of choice in the Xbox 360.  The Wii ofcourse is above even that

uhm the PS2 is still selling 10 years later with 2-3 next gen systems sitting right next to it. does that fly in the face of all the assumptions you made?????

X-Box 360 is dominating America, but most of those sales come from "fly over" states and rural farm towns. Here in NYC for example, games like the MLB the Show have PS3 winning the HD console war easy. We all know that if Sony holds down key areas like major citys and Japan who are trend setters, then PS3 will be the more wanted item, while the 360's "walmart darling" bargain bin image could devastate the 360's chances for long term viability.

Thats what I believe. Does anyone have any good reason to counter that without referencing a 10 year plan?

Retailers and consumers decide how long something remains on the shelves. So if there are next generation consoles competing for shelf space, that shelf space is only going to come out of the lowest selling consoles alotment. It happens every time a generation switch over occours, and there has never been a precedent where 2-3 next generation and 2-3 current generation consoles have been sold at the same time at retail. So why would we face anything different if the same basic reasons behind this are the same? Since the PS3 is the lowest selling console, it will be the first to get kicked to the curb.

"That's what I believe.  Does anyone have any good reason to counter that without referencing a 10 year plan?"

Right there, Squil is asking people to make a counter argument against the statement made in his thread title.

He then goes on for a paragraph without mentoning 2012 a single time in his entire argument.  He offers to no proof to justify his thread title -- and then he asks people to argue against it. . . presumably from an emotional perspective, since there is no specific argument going on here.

Look night, I'm definitely not trying to get squillium banned, and I don't think he deserves a ban -- I mean come on, he's good company!  No drama is necessary here -- I'm just saying that he offered no data or proof of why he "believes" 2012 will be the American death knell of the PS3.

Perhaps he should have made his main argument (and title):  "PS3 will be discontinued at some point in America."  Hmm...  inflamatory words, right there  :)

Squil makes good posts and sloppy posts, this is a sloppy one...  maybe he's having a bad day?  Feeling obsolete?

New Star Trek?

*edit* Or wait, better thread title (a little more inflammatory, still part of the argument):

"PS3 will be discontinued in the US first when the next generation starts."

^That last title would probably have been best.

Its very different when one system is making profit and the other is struggling to make profit over another 10 years.

Oh really?  Here in Indianapolis and every major city I've seen, the Xbox 360 is still dominating in almost every single game.

Sure major cities have a chance of buying the more expensive stuff because that is a bigger part of their lifestyle and their wages are generally higher than other parts of the US.  That doesn't change the fact that apparently the 360 still has majority favor.

And it's funny that you mention the Xbox as being "'walmart darling' bargain bin image" and state that this could devastate it, when the whole concept of Wal-Mart is to sell things at the lowest price.  Oh and you know how there are 200 million Wal-Mart shoppers?  Yeah, not exactly a bad thing for the 360 to be favored by Wal-Mart.

Well, the thread title implied something much more specific than what he said in his post. I'm not sure I understand where you disagree with me, except... emotionally?

I disagree with your attempt to give Squilliam some unfavorable reputation and to label this as some flame bait thread.

You also stated he offered no data or other proof related to the topic, but he did.

So, do we disagree now?  Cause I think maybe you call people fanboys when you're mad :)

And by the way, what's up with your signature?  I don't know MikeB, but I followed one of the links from someone's sig and it brought me to a forum which didn't really make him sound like some kind of Sony agent at all.  It sounded like a couple of people arguing on a forum and accusing eachother of being banned from other forums a lot.  Does that really constitute a witch hunt like this, where a bunch of people on the forums here all post extremely negative things about one person in their signatures?

I guess what I'm asking is, can you prove it?  (Sometimes I wonder about these things, can you blame me?)
