The Ps3, the Black horse of Consoles. In all my years of gaming I have never known a console so hated and disliked by the gamers of today. However Sony’s goliath refused to die and in 2009 it may prove itself to be the number one console. Like a Japanese Anime character after being beaten by the bad guys the Ps3 is coming back with vengeance.
This year the 360 has had less than stellar exclusive content. Fallout 3 has had many add on packs but all of them have been broken, The Lost and the Damned had poor sales figures and Halo Wars sucked. Microsoft is yet to announce a ground breaking exclusive this year while losing sequels to previously exclusive games. Nintendo are still running away with sales but what do they have to get us excited this year. As we all awaited the big announcement at GDC thoughts of a new Zelda game on the Wii ran though our heads only to be crushed by the announcement of Spirit Tracks on the DS. Wii Fit sales have finally started to trail off and the upcoming attachment for the wii-mote has less than average prospects.
So Sony has an opportunity ahead of them, the question is can they capitalise on it? They sure as hell can! 2009 has a number of exclusive releases for the goliath including Uncharted 2 and God of War 3. Final Fantasy Xiii is remaining an exclusive for the Ps3 in Japan and is scheduled for a post April release in 2010 in America, securing most of the sales for the title. Along with a number of other games the Ps3 is back in business.
Previously the 360 was better than the Ps3 with multi-format games being smoother and more refined than their Ps3 counterparts. However in recent times multi-format games have equaled out on both consoles with exclusive content appearing on both machines. For example Batman Arkham Asylum has bonus levels on the Ps3 version if you pre-order with GAME. So it all comes down to the exclusive titles. So what have Sony got that makes me confident enough to write a fanboy incitement article? Read on!
Infamous
Infamous is constantly compared to Prototype. Being compared to a game of the year contender is a compliment where I come from. Infamous looks to impress gamers with great graphics and interesting game play. Sure I have my reservations over how good it’s going to be, but something brings me coming back for another look. With the US release you also get a beta pass for a game that should rock this world!
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Drakes Fortune is the most underrated game on the current generation. Most Ps3 gamers have never played it and are worse off for it. Uncharted was the perfect blend of 80’s action and 80’s plot to have ever hit the gaming market. You could not help but love the game, it did nothing new but, did everything old right. Uncharted 2 looks to make a name for itself as the game that blends platforming in an urban environment seamlessly. Uncharted 2 also adds a multiplayer mode to the game. The first game that has ever attempted a capture the flag mode where you can throw the flag sounds interesting. Naughty Dog has promised this will become tactical with capture points being above climbing distance for that added depth to the game. Uncharted 2 should be the game that everyone remembers in 2009 if it wasn’t for one more title.
Heavy Rain
Since I watched the tech demo way back when I have been obsessed with information on this game. Developed by the team that brought us Fahrenheit (indigo prophecy for the US) Heavy Rain looks better than any game out today, that picture above is in game! Qte does seem to be playing a major role in the game as the only trailer shows it and that generally means get ready for much more. However much like Shenmue the buttons seem contextual rather than random like many games today, hopefully resulting in a fluid cinematic game. Even the tech demo shown many years ago is impressive and I strongly suggest you watch it.
God of War 3
You don’t have to be a Sony fan to realize how much this game is going to kick ass. The God of War series is well known for its brutal action and awesome context sensitive finishing moves and moving into the next generation can only result in greatness. Kratos is on his way to bring down the gods of Olympus with the help of the titans. Sony knows a lot about making giant creatures awesome, just look at Shadow of the Colossus. Now think SotC with Kratos, it’s a win, win situation. With Sony promising a smooth combat system that will have you shouting at the screen with joy we can only have high hopes for this one.
White Knight Chronicles
Some of us have been waiting for the conformation of this game hitting outside of Japan for quite some time now, Sony have announced we will get our wish. The current generation of console’s are seriously lacking JRPG’s of a high quality and this game might well be the answer to our prayers. A real time combat system that blends the fast action of a western RPG and the leveling and story from the eastern games could result in something RPG fans have been waiting for. Sony’s answer to Mass Effect? They had best be working hard to pull this one off, but with Mass Effect 2 a long way off into 2010 they have their opportunity.
Ratchet and Clank: Future A Crack In Time
he original Ps3 debut of Ratchet is actually the best selling Ps3 game of all time. Unsurprisingly as it was one of the best games on the console. Insomniac has produced some of the best Ps3 games to date, with Resistance 2 being overlooked due to the strength of Killzone 2. Insomniac strike back with the return of the dynamic duo on the Ps3 and they look better than ever. As always we can expect some brand new gadgets and guns, with one designed by a fan after winning a competition. The only thing that could top this game in the platforming/shooting/cartoon stakes would be the return of Jak and Daxter, come on Naughty Dog the fans are waiting.
My thoughts:
For PS3 owner this is again another great year, with all this game coming on the horizon. For some maybe it is indeed the year of the PS3. The "year of the PS3" is subjective and we also have to wait until the year ends before claiming of any of sort. E3 is fast approaching Sony, Miscrosoft and nintendo or maybe (apple)? have yet to surprise with their reveal and announcement.
