Well.. Dead or Alive 2 was the first 3D fighter to use multi-tiered stages AND interactive environment. But Mortal Kombat 3 was the first fighter of any kind to have multi-tiered stages. In MK it didn't really have an impact on the gameplay though. In DOA the environment is a key element of the gameplay, in MK it really wasn't. And in Tekken 6 it will also be a key element of the gameplay mechanics, which means, Tekken 6 ripped off DOA gameplay.
MK didn't have interactive environments, in the sense that, all that can happen when fighting, is getting hit by the other or pushed into a corner that you can't get out of. With DOA2. The ground was part of the gameplay (uneven surfaces gives different attack effects), the wall was part of the gameplay (damage dependable of wall type and attack type, and recovery also dependable of wall type), water is part of the gameplay (always counter hits on slippery surfaces), the ceiling is part of the gameplay and those all have an influence on the type of combo you can do. And depending on the force against a certain wall, you can drop down. Did MK have any of that except punching someone through a roof? No.
Tekken is ripping of the combo part and the interactive walls part from DOA, whether you like it or not.
