And Mortal Kombat is just an example. The Dragonball Z series has frequently done this sort of thing too.

 

Oh please.. MK was NOT interactive.. Punching someone through the roof to get to a new stage is simply multi-tiered, not interactive, because the wall itself didn't affect the gameplay at all, and neither does the new stage.
