Forums - Sony - UMD less Patapon 2 ... a dangerous trend ??

I fail to understand why people want UMD less, downloadable only games that they won't be able to buy used, or sell after they are done with the game. We have already seen that the prices of these downloadable only games never drops (case in point Fatal Inertia EX still at original price even after several years while the xbox version can be had for much less).

I would much rather ask for UMD based games that can be "installed" on my flash card for faster access.

If this trend takes off we will be basically renting a game for FULL price.

AM I alone in this?

Nope you are not alone as I share this sentiment but most people lack the perspective to see bigger picture than increased battery life.

Well lets see, the gaming industry is against re-sellin used games SONY and Nintendo and some developers have mentioned this. PSP has a huge pirating issue, SONY has said if this continues THERE WILL BE NO MORE PSP, as developers wont work on it., PSP GO!!! and PSP 3000 will be sold at the same time if you dont want it dont get it or just keep your old PSP if you do get it

Of course they are. If I were publisher I'd hate second hand market even more than pirates. But just becouse it's good for them that doesn't mean it's good for consumer.

I know they don't want you to sell the games or buy them used. However, they have been making profits for 30 years without this.

Understanding that they want to "increase" their profits and wanting to pay more are two different things.

If everything works out for the corporations that want to increase their profits you will be paying for your bandwidth by the number of bytes you download as well.

Just because games are downloadable only doesn't mean there won't be piracy.... Look at DL only PC games.

Unfortunately, there is a stigma against piracy among the hardcore gaming community who wish to see the end of it, but no dl only service is an answer to that.

Patapon 2 is one of Sony's biggest franchises, so it makes sense to experiment dl only with a high profile game that people will end up downloading regardless of personal feelings about the issue.

but wants good for the consumer doesn't mean good for the industry, if they continue to let PSP go as it is it will be gone for good and we wont be worrying about DL only or not

Used games might be bad for the developers but if it was bad for the consumers Gamestop wouldn't be in the business, nor would a lot of other used game companies like Gamecrazy. The consumer will speak their mind if Patapon 2 doesn't sell as download only. If it sells well then thats where Sony will be heading.

It's going to take some pretty big ones by either Sony, MS or Nintendo to be the first company to go digital only, and then, and only then will we see how well digitial distribution really works.

Don't get me wrong. We are going to be going digital only some year, but the question is how many years before it happens? Comcast and ATT bandwith restrictions don't help this matter either.

It's just that simple.

Consumers run the industry not the developers. No one will buy your product unless you can convince them. People also forget DS games are just as easy to pirate yet games sell million on the DS.

to answer part of you question..we could be going DL ony next gen, MS has already stated thats there focus SONY too especially with the patent they filed called the PS cloud which is suppose to be like steam or some super online database
