you have no idea wtf your talking about do you? HDD expensive? Its a flipping 80GB 2.5" HDD. Its costs less then NewEgg's $35 80GB 2.5" drives because Sony buys in bulk. If the HDD costs Sony $20 per PS3 I'd be shocked. Cell Processor probably costs about $110 each. RSX GPU maybe $40? XDR Ram, if they havent switched to using two sticks of XDR2 ram yet, $40 maybe Casing isnt expensive but does cost like $20 CPU/GPU heatsink costs like $25
OK so far cost from my guestimate is $255. Now add in the following final pieces of hardware. Blu-ray drive - $140 Motherboard w/ wifi built in - $30
So the PS3 costs Sony about $425 to make give or take. So my guess is Sony isnt losing much anymore in terms of PS3 sales. Its still painful to lose the cash but they are close to breaking even. If the RSX or Cell shrinks one more time, Blu-ray drive cost drops again, or they switch to two sticks of XDR2 ram they should be able to break even before the end of the year. No matter what they will make profit. |
HDD it's add cost, for a console = expensive.
the arcade its 200$ mainly because it doesn't have a HDD , or at least they are trying to say when 60gb its 100$ more.

BD Drive for $70 retail (so it cost less to make)

Microsoft is ripping customers off plain and simple.

From what I've heard, Blu-ray drives are anywhere between $50-$100 to produce, and constantly falling. This holiday, there will be $99 BD players on the market.
Losses occurring in Sony's games division now have alot less to do with the cost of the PS3 (probably breaking even), but more into software development and marketing. Their quality first/second party titles still don't sell what they should even for the install base. Marketing is Sony's weakest link right now. All of these "overhyped" Sony exclusives on internet forums are way underhyped outside of these internet forums.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

I don't think the Cell costs $110 to make. It's a ~250 million transistor count 65nm process processor, it shouldn't cost $110.

The BD drive component is under $100 at manufacturer cost. iSupply estimated a price of $125 back in January 2008.
The key component was the BD diode itself, which originally cost over $100 alone, but these have drastically reduced in price since the format debuted (2007 saw production meet demand).
The 65nm Cell processor costs about $60 currently. The original 90nm chip was about $89.
The RSX was originally estimated at about $129. No idea what it currently is, but with the 65nm die shrink and the age of the chip itself (essentially a custom 7800GTX), I'd be surprised if it was even half that today.
XDR memory was originally about $50.
The entire motherboard (including the CBE, RSX, XDR mem, EE/GS chipset, etc. soldered on it) was originally estimated to cost about $350.
The aluminum HSF with copper heat pipes would maybe add anywhere from $30-50 to the cost (I'd lean towards the lower end compared to retail prices of OTS HSFs)
The housing itself was surprisingly expensive at about $60 (just the plastic casing). The current casings (40GB onward) might be a bit cheaper. They feel lighter to me, but that could just be from overall component reduction over the original 60GB model.
The original PSU was actually a pretty beefy 380w considering it used about 200w under load. Not sure what the 40GB and current 80GB use although consumption dropped considerably with each version (CBE 90-65nm die shrink, RSX 90-65nm die shrink).
Assembly was and should still be about $40 per unit.

Well the 360 is actually successful so they get away with charging a little more for accessories. Had the PS3 been success like they were hoping do you think it would be $400 right now?
lol...brd and the cellz will save sony...from what, I can't tell, but from something...maybe profits...
