10 year plan indeed.

Like how PS3 launched 10 years after PS2 release..........

ps2 launched in 2000, ps3 in 2007, not quite 10 years

Even if he was correct, that has nothing to do with was i said.

then what are you talking about?

Sony has said the PS3 will have a 10 year life. Which means no PS4 till 2016.

Tretton reaffirms the 10 year life-cycle of PS3

It's been said before, but Jack Tretton thought it wise to re-issue a statement regarding the life expectancy of the PlayStation 3. A lot of folks may see a price drop this early indicative of a short console life, a desperate move, or the clever cutting of manufacturing costs to help consumers save money also. We like the latter, but the former two are what need addressing -- Tretton assures the world that the PS3 is set for a future-proof, 10 year life. He said Sony could have made a PS2.5 and taken a ride on the money train, but they opted not to. He takes a shot at the competition, saying "To be perfectly honest with you, I think that is a bit of what we are competing with." Or is he talking about the PS2 itself?

A few more choice statements from Tretton covered how the system doesn't need to convert everybody from day one. They can take their time selling consoles across ten years, he says. We guess this is since the price is an obstacle for many people right now, even with the price cut. Finally, Tretton assures us Sony has built "
a machine that we firmly believe is future proof and is going to carry us for the next 10 years." We hope so and we can't wait for all the years ahead of us. We hardly know more than a handful of titles slated for 2008, let alone 2010.

Blazinghead is right then. The PS3 launched and the PS2 continued. That's what he's referring to. I guess though if you feel the need to think illogically, then go right ahead.

Thats because the PS2 was a monster and a market leader with over 100 million units sold. The PS1 did not even last 10 years. It was pretty much gone by 2002.

does anybody know when the last time was that sony actually talked about their 10 year plan? I think the last time they talked about it was right after their first price drop back in 2008. Does anybody have a more current statement from sony?

well duh, of course the PS4 is in dev.

So is the DS2
PSP 2
Wii 2
Xbox 720

theri all in development, hell Wii developpment started in 2002, why are peopel getting their panties in a bunch over news that the obvious has been stated?

id, for one, be pissed as hell if they did this. me and my brother[two teenage kids..] worked our ASSES off to buy our ps3 just 5 months ago. i want to enjoy it for longer than 3 years before i feel pressured to upgrade to the next gen. i HATE how fast "generations" of gaming goes. its just more ways to suck money out of people, IMO.

Definitely the next Playstation is not going to come before the end of 2012.. so u will easily get 3 more years to play PS3 before worrying abt getting a new one.

To bad game journalism is utter crap.

No shiet they are working on it, but no 2012 is way early.

Sony is caught up in a fierce symmetric war. I would not be surprised if Sony wanted to get a system out. The systems are both stagnant which means they will want the next cycle to start. Note that the losers have the shorter cycle, and console cycles have gotten shorter and shorter. The PS4 before 2012 is not out of the question.

PS1 was discontinued in 2005.

 So PS1 = 1995 - 2005 (10 years)
      PS2 = 2000 - Current ( 9+ years)
      PSP = 2004 - Current (5+ years)
      PS3 = 2006 - Current (3+ years)

 Why can't PS4 be 2012 - 2022?

 As for everyone saying 2012 is too early its three years away from now. PS3 and Wii will be 6 years old and the 360 will be seven years old.

This is easily doable, if you basically launch an upgraded PS3 and slap a PS4 tag on it.It would decree development cost for sure, but it would still be costly to launch. More memory, faster chips, hmmmm...just like a computer. It would wreck havoc on sales of the ps3 though, and sony would have to discontinue it, since there is noway in hell they would be able to support 3 console platforms. The ps2 is still going to be making moolah, so you wouldn't kill that.

PS1 was officially declared out of production March 23, 2006 - 9 months before the PS3 launched. PS1 was basically dead around 2002. I guess technically, it lasted more than 10 years.

The end of 2012 is about 3.5 years away. Components become cheap over time. I can definitely see PS4 breaking even from the start if it launches at 300-400. R&D will be minimal if similar architecture is used.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

It sounds do-able and I kind of expect this to happen. Hell if Sony really wants to be first 2010/2011 isnt really out of the picture. The PS3 will still be able to have support until it's 10 year plan has seen it's end. PS4 will launch at a $299.99 price point between the years 2010-2012

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
