Chinese people are infatuated with Korean pop culture but the stuff that they love about Korean culture probably isn't going to appeal as much to Western audiences. Korean music is hugely popular but if you don't like J-pop then you probably won't like it. I watched one particular Korean drama for 9 hours straight on a bus and to be honest i thought it was just crap despite the fact that my female colleagues loved it.

I would suppose the reason that Western people are more interested in Japanese culture compared with other Eastern cultures simply because we have had significant contact with Japan longer than most other Eastern countries and there has been more time for common ground to develop and be discovered.

Because North Korea is communist, and there isn't much going on in South Korea.

Plus Japan has hot girls, sushi, and video games.

Nerds are obsessed with Japan because Japan is one of the most influential centres for gaming and animation in the world.

Korea is also very influential in pc gaming circles though, but thats because of the crazy standard of the professional gamers there.

Speaking from an Australia perspective, not many people outside of the "nerd" culture really care about Japanese culture, sans whaling issues.
