Forums - Gaming Discussion - 10 most important video games of all time...

Shouldn't Pong, Space Invaders, Pac Man and Donkey Kong be considered among the most important videogames of all time?

Around the Network

I don't like this list. Why are they taking smb 3 and not smb or even donkey kong if they want games that represent the beginning of genres? I mean, smb 3 has just perfected the gameplay of smb... that the newest game in this list is from 1994 isn't a good sign, but this is another point why I think this list isn't accurate. At least one of the n64 games that made the step into the 3rd dimension should be in the list, for example sm64 or OoT. And games like Tomb Raider or a first person shooter should be part of the list aswell. and of course the games happy squrriel mentioned...

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

I dont like 'warcraft series' either. If they follow the start... warcraft. If they want the pinnicle, they should pick WC2. Were is UO on there? It created a totally new game.

I fly this flag in victory!

The list sucks... Wolfenstein should have been there not Doom and SMB one should be there instead of SMB3.

No Zelda games?!?

Around the Network

Me thinks a bigger, and much better list is being needed to make benefit the glorious history of gaming culture.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

This list doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe they're trying to start with some underappriciated, unrecognized games, but not including the likes of Pong, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders or SMB?? Huh?

No title in the Zelda series is deserving. In terms of "importance", Zelda is probably the most overrated. No Zelda was pivotal for the success of the videogame industry, or even the success of Nintendo. Think of it, until just recently with Okami, no company has really imitated the Zelda series in a successful way. Great series, but it just isn't as influential as Mario, FF, Warcraft, Doom etc. I think Donkey Kong Country (though not worthy of top 10 status either) was more important to Nintendo than any individual Zelda game. Other Nintendo games that would come before Zelda are .... Pokemon - Top 20 potential - think of how it made the handheld platform mainstream SMB - Top 15 potential - should be ahead of SMB3, but you have to factor in the movie "Wizard" which makes things closer than they appear at first glance. I remember no game before it which had that level of mainstream hype. Donkey Kong - Top 5 potential - IMO the biggest omission from this list. If the game was a financial flop and Nintendo exited the arcade business who knows what would have happened.

Lifetime Sales Prediction - 6/29/2013
Wii U - 38 million
XBOX One - 88 million
Playstation 4 - 145 million

Your right catofellow, back in the Nes days Zelda didn't do anything special. It wasn't one of the first games that was free-roaming and let you complete tasks in a different order. Hell it didn't even basically invent the save file for which almost no other game had at the time. I mean no one ever immitates that anymore. Who needs to save their game when you can beat all your games in one sit down and come back later and all that info is gone. Zelda also never made one of the best and true transitions from 2-d into 3-d. Z-targeting camera was useless and a series that has almost every one of their games considered in someone's top list of best game ever made really has no influence what so ever. Completely overrated.

I would put Ocarina in a top 15, and LoZ in a top 30. Ocarina was the most highly regarded game of that generation, and was influential in many many aspects, from its pacing and focus on storytelling, to its targeting system, and its "sandbox" theory of "let the player do whatever he thinks he should be able to do." LoZ was the bridge from RPGs to adventure games, becoming definitive of the adventure genre. The whole concept of guiding the player, yet letting them explore, merging Eastern and Western game theories, was quite important. Few games have tried to directly imitate Zelda, but to deny its influence is foolish. Donkey Kong... Not only did it establish Nintendo as a major industry force, and establish the career of Miyamoto, it was also the first graphical game to feature a fully fleshed out story, with an introduction and conclusion told in primative cut-scenes. Furthermore, the very concept of the platformer, with the gameplay mechanics being running and jumping, are rooted in Donkey Kong. And things like Mario's design, which worked WITH hardware limitations to create a highly defined and recognizable human figure with personality, did a lot to shape art design and game theory itself. Add that all together, and some would say the whole concept of "playing as the hero" is more rooted in Donkey Kong than any other game... Donkey Kong's exclusion is baffling and inexcusable. Pokemon Red/Blue should certainly be top 30, and SMB top 5. Pong should be the first game in... Space Invaders should be given credit for influence in arcades, and being the largest establishing force of the Atari 2600, and in turn, the entire home console market as we know it... FF7, SF2... Hell, even Gran Turismo might make more sense on that list than Sensible Soccer. It not only set a standard of design, it was massively popular, and an establishing force for Sony and for racing sims.
